Iwo was pounded on and off for about 6 months before the invasion, both by TF.38/58 and by B-24's from the Marianas, so it would have been pretty much a moonscape long before the invasion fleet arrived.
Of course this pounding just confirmed to the Japanese that the Americans were coming, so was probably counter-productive.
