The smoke is the bullet exploding. In WW2, and in present day Browning M2's they fired API and APIT rounds. API being "Armour piercing incendiary" and APIT being "Armour piercing incendiary tracer" which exploded on impact, creating devastating effects on enemy planes, at least japanese planes such as the Zero, Oscar, Kate etc. (Obviously, the german planes were harder to knock down because of their armor)
A known .50 cal round used today is the Norwegian NM140 MP/MP-T (Multipurpose, Multipurpose-Tracer) in USA its produced under license as the Raufoss Mk.211

I fired a lot of those rounds when i was in the army in 2008, it sure was an awesome sight seeing those bullets explode on impact!
