One of the biggest reasons the Navy really would never have put the Mustang on a carrier, is that liquid cooled engine. The amount of parts the ship would have had to have carried and the amount of maintainence needed for these powerplants made the airplane unattractive to the eyes of Navy admirals.
Notice all those Pratt and Whitneys on the noses of U.S. Navy airplanes.
Didn't seem to bother the RN, but the USN definately preferred air cooled motors!
