Not true. The plate was a bullet proof glass and not just for displaying the sight image. My friend that has a Mk VIII says that when you shine the image on a large sheet of glass you can still only see it in a small area similar in size to the round reflector glass on earlier installations.
Sorry I did not use "armored" before glass plate in the sentence immediately after the first time I used it, but I think it should be obvious that is what I meant. What your friend says makes no sense. The edges of the sight being obscured is a product of the 3D engine. You can see the edges of the "hole" as you move your head around with TrackIR. The gunsight picture is the right size, it just doesn't work with the way the Corsair cockpit was set up in Il-2. Same is true for stock gunsights, you just don't see edges of the "hole" because your head is rigid the and the spaces in between stadia and rings in the gunsight image are completely transparent. That said, I'd love to see some pictures illustrating that interesting claim.
