Quote:We nearly came to blows over Turkey and the occupation of Eastern EuropeTurkey had sat on the fence almost to the end of WWII, declaring war on Germany on Feb 1945 as a formailty, seeing which way the wind was going and preferring to stay chums with the west. The reason was that throughout the war Stalin had pressured Turkey to give them Black Sea ports, obviously with a mind to retaining them in the post war period. Russia and Turkey were not good friends, thus Stalin felt some annoyance that the democratic nations had secured the Turkish vote (as it were). It was because of the increased American belligerence under Truman (who severely disliked communism) with the emergence of NATO and their support in Turkey that made Russia angry.
The occupation of eastern europe was agreed as part of the peace settlement and only became an issue in the 50's when the Soviet Union enforced communist rule on independent countries in the region.
In other words, the Cold War tension erupted after 1946, not during it, though I don't doubt there were political hassles even at that stage.
Quote:I like your storyline but if I use your ideas I cannot see anyway that Europe can be free againWhichever way the wind blows. It's up to you and your own story to determine whether the West can either prevent the Russian advance or fight it back. Ultimately, the US can always invent the atom bomb, but if you don't want that sort of mayhem then consider other moves. I once thought of an idea in which Churchill used Finland as a staging post for an invasion. I'm sure you could think of others.
