umm...., you know gimp converts images too. You change templates to rgb mode for editing then back to indexed mode and then when you hit "save as" it will give you a defualt name like photo01.psd. You just make sure to name it photo01.bmp. You have to manually type "B" "M" "P" (bitmap) at the end of the name.
when you switched from rgb back to indexed is when gimp changes it from like 25mb (or however large the file was) to 3mb. And then when you change it to .bmp form it goes down to 1mb. Just click yes when it asks to inport or export image.(it asks when you manually change the name, saying .bmp file cant handle transparent layers)
