One other issue I have is that the 'perfect' terrain option in-game is greyed out?

There are three requirements to run Perfect Landscape mode, and all three of them can be set by running IL2Setup.exe in the main game folder (as well as editing the conf.ini by hand:

1. Run the game in OpenGL mode
2. Run the game in a 32-bit color depth
3. Turn Stencil buffer ON

Once those three things are satisfied, then the Perfect Landscape option should no longer be greyed out. If it still is, then you will have to resort to editing the conf.ini to force it on.

If the shadows are too dark, then try Polygonal Stipple ON.
