IL-2 Guide for Computers, Benchmarking, Optimizing, Tweaking
#95

Hello, and welcome to the PC tech Sticky topic of AAA.

In your request for help, you wrote:

I have Nvida 6800-6900 on an older HP single core system (2003) ish. Now I was insterested in your massive post because of the up comming SOW relese and want to be prepared with the right system. I began a half-ass benchmarking process but only to investigate the system and how it works ...call it a probe if you will. I DL'd NHancer and installed it. I am a novice with graphic settings.....So I need some questions answered....:~)

Making IL-2 run well is possible with your system, though OpenGL perfect settings are out your reach as far as smooth operating in the simulation. I do not think that OpenGL perfect settings are possible in your computer while expecting smooth operation. Give to me your computer model, CPU type details, and GPU type details, along with how many cores you have. After you provide these, I will make a final recommendation about whether to use OpenGL or DirectX.

Make sure that you have a clean, unused, virgin copy of IL-2 and anything else that must have a copy for safekeeping.

Important ideas which I have for you:

1) The exact nHancer version which matches your graphics card driver must be installed. If you give me your exact computer model with the exact graphics driver number, then I can help you to choose an nHancer version that matches your system. This information to make a decision is found at the nHancer website/Downloads/Read Me.

2) If you have the single core laptop, then you must not use multi-core and dynamic tiling.

If you have dual core, then you should activate multi-core, multi-thread, Pre-rendered Frames, and Dynamic Tiling.

The humble confession by you that you are a novice can be a good thing, because you will not have bias, or pre-conceived notions about graphics issues. My tech help topic is now basically complete and you came to a great one to learn.

db605-A/S Wrote:I also have Track IR5
Fraps is showing 60fps down to 20fps the "black death" drops to 10 fps during explosions.
Running OPEN GL with perfect settings.
The trouble I am having is a lot of stuttering that appeares to be sound related, so I turn off the sound....problem still there...The stuttering seems to occur when the pilots text appears on the screen...."check you six" and whatnot, this really kills your aim.

Also there is more aliasing than I like, which is why I want to try to use the Nhancer.

With Nhancer an Antialiasing on nothing seems to happen....no improvment. Am I using it right?

1) TrackIR and Fraps will decrease the performance of IL-2 at least some. In most very powerful computer systems, this is not noticeable, but it should be obvious in your computer. Try running The Black Death, both with and without TrackIR, and you should see a difference. Fraps will eventually be closed for normal flying in IL-2, but you could temporarily close it as an experiment to see the effect on the IL-2 performance.

2) You should be able to achieve a small improvement during The Black Death track, eventually. You should have the Vertical Sync OFF during the Benchmarking, which is what you should do next. After that is the Optimization stage, which is what you will do last and have Vertical Sync ON at that time.

During the Benchmarking, you will use the IL-2 Setup and decide whether to use the foundations, such as OpenGL or DirectX and other il2set.exe settings, multi-core, mult-thread, prerendered frames, and dynamic tiling. During the Benchmarking stage that you have now, you are discovering the basic size and impact of IL-2 in your computer, hence the term Benchmarking.

Later, I will help you with Optimiztion, but let us focus on Benchmarking for now.

3) The pilot chat text can be disabled if you prefer that. Do you want it to be displayed, or not displayed?

4) Anti-Aliasing will effect stuttering. For the Benchmarking Phase, where you are now, you need to set this low. You might set this to " Application Controlled " during the Benchmarking Phase at this time. Later, in the Optimization Phase, you will increase this to your preference.

db605-A/S Wrote:A quick tutorial would help, the manual ins'nt much help. Do I start it and minimize it like track IR, or is it supposed to "boot" my game.

Now when I turn off Nhancer to go back and compare, the IL2fb.exe quits, I can't boot the game. So I went to the setup.exe re-ran it...that worked once....
It wont start no matter what I do now.

I have not been able to resolved this yet..I worked 3 12 hr shifts this week so that leaves around an hour or so to play.

Also I had the dreded (Hook) error, I fixed that last week sometime, but now it is back... and its intermitent. I don't know if its related or not. But any insight would be helpful.

I can send Conf.ini and what ever else you may need (if at all) when I get home after midnight or tomorrow. Iam at work at the moment but I will try to check back.

Thanx

Believe it or not, this tech help topic is a quick, condensed tutorial. There is much information which I could have included, but for the sake of avoiding confusion and not frustrating people with many pages, I created it as short as I believe that it should be.

1) All programs, which are related to IL-2, should be open but minimalized to the taskbar. Never close the nHancer: Let it stay operating during IL-2. You should check to make sure that all your nHancer settings are correct and activated before each time that you start IL-2. I recommend manually starting the nHancer Profile which you want to use everytime before you start IL-2. Let the nHancer be ON all the time.

2) The confi.ini file is for Optimization stage and we should wait until that time.

The post by you shows an interested, so I replied appropriately with a thorough response. This took time but I am glad to help. Feel free to continue the conversation. Big Grin
