I've studied Preddy's tactic and it does work pretty well, he was known to flying outside the bomber boxes and positioning his flight on either side of the Bomber formations.

Yes, this is it, exactly. I would add that it also depended on the size of the bomber formation, bomber altitude, the size of the escort, the weather conditions, and the amount of enemy fighter opposition which was expected.
