The XB-36 flew in 1946 it was completely different than the version on the first page,the version in the pic is a B-36D featherweight II config from the mid 50s (a light model of the B-36).1946 VERSION BELOW
The prototype(1946)....HUGE landing gear,no outboard jet engines,cockpit arrangement very different,MUCH heavier,And older engines then the late B-36s.

The B-36 was an excellent aircraft I'll admit but when the air force(US) developed the B-52(in service 1955 XB-52 first flight 1952) and well the B-36 was an obsolete aircraft by the late 50s.
