If you weren't gentle enough with the throttle, they might. It was the first jet engines, they weren't reliable at all.

Yap, if you add a giant amount of fuel in the engines, it all ignites at the same time, rather than continues
If you look at the RL jets, they slowly push the throttle too, check it out on youtube
