Here is the Terek River region where the largest battles took place. I gave more attention to this area by adding more towns and variety of ground textures. The city of Grozny is not on the map but there are a couple of its satellite airfields.

The 2D map makes you think the land is a desert but it does look more green with the textures. I edited the midland4 texture to make it look more dry to represent end of summer/Fall time period. The steppe land north and northeast of Mozdok is actually very arid and dry so the texture was edited again to look more dry and dusty. IMO the colors blend very nicely with very little contrast between different textures.
