AVG occupies just over 2mb on my system.

As for the versions of Norton that I have used..
I first used Norton when it was Peter Norton back in the late 80's and continued using it until just a couple of years ago.
I've had access to almost every version of Norton(Symantec)/McAffee (including Military versions) and I find them to be huge resource hogs.

As for not having McAffe scanning.....
It's still scanning everything that is being run on your system as long as it's in memory. That's how virus scanners work. The footprint you refer to and are seeing is only the active component in the system tray. You may want to uninstall it and do some testing to see if that clears up your problems. That's probably the best way to see if your virus scanners are the problem.
