F4F-3 did not come from the factory with reflector gun sights. The N3 and windshields were installed aboard ship prior to war time deployment with the mountings manufactured aboard ship. Some F4F-4 at Midway had the N3 factory installed, but all F4F-4 had the Mk8 by the time they were being used at Guadalcanal.
Now if the F4U-1 went into combat in February 1943 (and the Corsair MkI was the identical airplane wings and all) why would they take a step backward and keep N3 gun sights and not have the Mk8 installed when it was there to replace the F4F-4 which was using the Mk8.
And to completely discount the testimony of the guys who actually had to use the Mk8 gun sight is ludicrous. Their life depended upon the use of this and I highly doubt even after your assumption that the interview or quote came 50 years after the fact that they forgot how they read and used the Mk8 gun sight.
