Good morning nic1,
when you install a patch you have to choose the directory where you installed IL-2.
The patch software, in most cases is to stupid to find the correct directory and
will install everything in C:\Program Files (x86), exactly where you should not install the game!
Have a look there, if you find a new directory, like IL-2 with a lot of new files... you know.
You might copy these files and put them into your IL-2 game directory -
or you delete them and install the 4.08m patch and following new.
Just read the messages during installation carefully and do not
"klick" to fast on the "YES" button. You'll be ask where to install the
patch - then choose your IL-2 game directory. All in all - it is quite simple.... 8)

P.S: Just a personal piece of advice - do not install every single mod there might be!
Choose one like UP, HSFX, HistoMod and so on. With one of them you'll get nearly everything
there is - and it will work! Read here the threads and you'll find all the links as well.
