Patch Summary Instructions for IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 version 4.08 - Patch Steps for Most Users - DVD or Digital Download Version
(If you have the digital download version of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 and want to add mods, then you have special instructions included here. All users point the downloaded patches at the installed main IL-2 1946 folder, when you get to that step.)
1) Install the digital download version of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 version 4.08 or make sure to be patched to 4.08 in all cases - DVD or Digital - before you continue. You must get IL-2 at the 4.08 level patch in order to continue - must be done if you want the later nice things. (Digital download comes at 4.08 all ready to apply patches, but check to be sure before you aquire it.)
Exceptions: 4.08 is included in the Mega Patch or the Ultra Patch - The links for either one of these is provided later in this post.
2) Apply the special modder patch for digital download version of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 4.08, which is aimed at the main folder of IL-2 4.08 ( not need for DVD IL-2)
(Do this before you apply the Mega Patch or the Ultra Patch, if you have the digital download copy of IL-2)
4.08 special patch - onto digital download only
(for digital download versions of IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 4.08 to allow certain mods - not needed for the DVD IL-2)

3) Apply the download for all patches through IL-2 4.11.1 - unless your mods require a specific patch - then you have completed the patch of IL-2.( You could apply the patches each one by one but needed only if you need a specific patch for a certain mod system which you want ).
Caution: The Mega Patch or the Ultra Patch revealed in this post, though they seem convenient, are more difficult to ensure that the files are not corrupt. The average user may give it a go but a modder demanding clean files for mod work would typically do only a hash count of patches to be certain of clean files.

4) Make copies of everything that you might need later. You may copy the whole patched and ready IL-2 before any mods so you have something in reserve. If you intend to do a lot of adding mods, then I suggest keeping a copy of the last modded IL-2 which made you happy before you go experimenting. Add mods to experimental copy only if you want to save much time should something go wrong.

Online servers sometimes require even the exact same skin pack across users in the missions.
Many servers have helpful people and forums to guide you in meeting their requirement.
You also have the option of hosting a mission in your own computer with someone who has the same version of IL-2, using multi-player, which shows the importance of having goals and applying the right patches to meet your goals.
Experimental copy (copies) of IL-2 helps much. Once you get IL-2 the way you want it, you may simply copy the whole folder almost anyway in your main drive that is not inside of another program file of some sort. You then can make another shortcut to it by finding the IL2.exe file in the main registry, right click it, then select Make a Shortcut.
Skin Packs Which Are Not Included There are also official skin packs available from 1C/ Team Daidolos which can be installed into certain major official patches. If you are interested, then search downloads at the 1C Publishing website. They are not included here because of possible conficts with online servers or can be overwritten by certain skin mods. If you are serious about skins, then I recommend that this not stop you, so test the skins on a separate copy of your installation to be safe. Special official skin packs require you to apply the official patches one by one if you want some skin packs but not others because each skin pack is for a specific official patch. If you prefer a skin offered in a skin pack to the modders version, then you may apply the offical skin pack after the mods are all installed, but beware that any time that you add something new to IL-2 then something might be changed by overwriting of files. When in doubt then keep both files when installation asks you if you want to overwrite all files. This way you keep both stock and modded skins. This might be tricky for a novice, but a bold person might welcome the challenge. Keeping copies of everything means that you can afford to experiment and risk something going wrong.

If you feel that you are ready for it, you may try the following "IL-2 MegaPatch 4.10.1m_EN" published by MaXMhZ, instead of patching one by one.
(Note that you might need the dll fix with it, which is why I do not recommend this for beginners because of handling and saving your own dll files...)
