Just to be clear though, it's my understanding that the FM and DM of these aircraft are strictly off limits. Is that not so?

I sure as hell hope so.. but call me pessimistic, i fear that i am seeing the forum sliding towards the Dark side, little by little over time, due to the demand to do so.

We need a stickied "Mission Statement" if the forum admins do indeed consider modificatopns that have a direct effect on FM's / DM's, to be considered a disqualifier in the process of considering aircraft mods. There is just too much room for potential abuse, or bending of the unofficial stated principles, otherwise.

Mine may not be a popular opinion.. so be it. It's my opinion only.

But then how would we add new planes at all? to make say, the fokker or CW-21 demon that we were supposed to get 2 or so years ago, they would need their own FM. Now I'd never agree to changing existing planes, but to expand beyond AI flyables, someone has to edit FMs.

I don't know the sentiment towards CFS3 here, but for what its worth, the avhistory.org 1% people are an impressive group. Perhaps a similar group could be formed work on FMs that would uphold historical accuracy and guard against possible cheats for new FMs, and no others could touch FMs for security?

The "don't touch the FMs argument" is silly. We can stick our heads in the sand, and it won't change a thing. We can't prevent it, and we sure as hell can not enforce who can and who can not modify the FM. It would be nice if we could have planes digitally signed to ensure online play stays fair, but I do not see how.

My current project is Spit MkII with it's own engine and FM. It will enable more realistic early western front scenarios. If you find that to be a blasphemy, don't use it and continue with your head in the sand.

Yes, and then how long till you get retards flying around in that Supersonic J8A?

Or perhaps uber strong armour? Or Uber-Guns. That is why we argue AGAINST it. To help prevent that as long as humanly possible, and not to allow it from this site, to mantain the integrety of it.

You have got 'retards' fucking up AW now.. And they don't even need any mods to do it..
Shooting people in their chutes to ruin their stats..
Doing a kamikaze into a mission critical 'recon' aircraft because they don't have the skill to shoot it down to prevent the other side from carrying out their task..
The 'rogue' pilot who gets pissed off and kills his own side because he can..
The list is endless, and no mods required!!
Although the idea of not touching the FM is sound, I'm afraid it's too late to implement any restrictions, because there are people on 'other sites' that have already done it.. Sad, but true!
I was dead set against it at first, but reality has sunk in now, I already fear its far too late..

Is better let the stock planes with its proper official FM and DM, but for new planes we could have in the sim, new FM and DM (properly researched) is the way. I fly the RedBaron3D modded (more than 100 planes now), and the Strike Fighter series (heavily modded now). I play also the Silent Hunter 3 modded.
Well, in these games there are some planes better done than others, but all of them are researched and projected to be close to the real thing. I have NEVER seen a MIG 17 with the FM of a MIG 25 and the DM of a M1 Abrams....
Don't be affraid. The mods are cursed by the online comunity now. Nothing can change this. Instead to worry about this, try to develop a method to don't allow new planes to be online. Thats all.

Actually I do want to fly the new planes online since offline game is just not fun for me. If we only had a way to say check and enforce that everybody runs the same FM as the server...any ideas?

So far, we do not have a comprehensive mod (except the sound mod that is). Everything else is a bunch of various independent tweaks and hacks. We need a comprehensive community mod with strict versioning. I'm talking about something like "community edition of il-2" with the best new features incorporated including sound, maps and flyables.

Only question is where do we draw the line in order to keep the high quality of the original?
I'm not a fan of frankenplanes, be sure, but I do not see anything wrong with creating subversions of existing aircraft like:
Spit MkII
possibly rare MkI with 2 x 20mm
Spit MkIX with gyro gunsight
Early MkIX (maybe we could reproduce the famous A3 vs IX test?)
Bf-109F1
Bf-109G10 with 20mm motorkannone not the famous "hungarian" version we have in game.
Early/late G2
...I'm sure there are other high quality flyables that can be created without the need for too much compromise regarding 3D model.
