Windsock

The lack of wind direction indication via a windsock has been a much needed mod since the start of the Il2 series,in my humble opinion.Would it be possible to add such a feature ?

The lack of wind indication is not actually needed because in IL-2 wind is not modelled Sad , but a windsock would be a good addition for realism.

But at present I think it's not possible to add new objects in game.

I totally agree that a windsock is a missing immersion factor in IL-2 , but at the risk of causing a bomb to go off, I think all the meteorology needs to be upgraded. Now I know many people's initial responses will be:
No; it will affect FMs
Not possible
Consider what it could add to the sim:
1. Rain and snow should be separated in the Mission Builders, after all snow often occurs when there is none on the ground (see transition of autumn to winter), and rain often occurs when snow is on the ground, esp in temperate Maritime environments (see English Channel) - often then creating nasty ground mist/fog (see the first week of the Battle of the Bulge).
2. Wind needs to be modelled , and as a separate element to visibility.
3. Clouds need to be categorized in 2 ways : by altitude and by density (ideally by cloud type as well, but baby steps). For instance, if cloud altitude was divided into
a.ground level - sea level to 500m
b.low alt - 300m to 3000m
c.med alt - 2500m - 5000m
d. high alt - 4000m +
and cloud density was categorized as
a.clear no clouds in that alt range
b. 1/5 small clouds in that alt range
c. 2/5 moderate sized clouds, small cloud formations at that alt range
d. 3/5 many moderate-large cloud banks at that alt range
e. 4/5 complete overcast with some holes at that alt range
f. 5/5 complete overcast at that alt range
In addition, sea state should not be married to cloud cover. Any one who watches the ocean over a period of time anywhere knows that sometimes a complete overcast comes with a dead calm - often so where I live in Nova Scotia Canada, and also often a beautiful bright sunny day occurs with a biting and powerful wind.

Also, winter landscapes should not automatically be concurrent to every body of water being an arctic ice sheet. Ideally winter landscapes should come with a choice of something like : Winter 1(no frozen bodies of water),
Winter 2 (inland water only frozen), Winter 3 (all inland water frozen, sea shore ice), Winter 4 (Complete Freeze Up Arctic Pack Ice).

Now I am no meteorologist, and I am no CG artist or programmer, but I do feel that these things if they could be incorporated could add hugely to the possibilities of this sim. There are guys on this site with amazing abilities, and I am throwing a bone out there to see who will gnaw at it.

LAL_RONE is producing a windsock as a static object - mission builders will be able to place it rotated to match the windmod configuration for the mission (it will not turn to match the wind on its own).

great stuff, will the sock be animated? might look a bit redundant if its not, but, never-the-less it will make a cool addtion Big Grin
