Is it possible to use Theatre of War files?

Here's a long shot:

I would like to know if someone has tried extracting the .SFS files found in the game Theatre of War.

If someone has/would try, maybe we can find a way to include objects from ToW, and, with luck, use the grass found in the game! That way we could have 3D grass in Il-2!

Any takers?

I don't care much about the grass, but this is a good idea - some of those vehicles look really great...

I approve of this only to add planes / tanks / ships. I would rather have a new plane in the game than 3-d grass. Besides, this is a combat sim. If you want to look at grass while flying there is FSX.

I still like this idea very much because it would provide the magicians here more 3-d parts of planes to make new ones, not to mention all the new ground vehicles we could get :!:

Oleg was originally planning to include the 3D grass in IL-2, but PCs at the time didn't have the power. I wonder if the code for that (and a lot of other cool stuff) has simply been "commented out". It might be worth examining IL-2 to see if there's anything like that which can simply be "un-commented" - i.e. unlocked and implemented. Food for thought.

If grass can really be enabled, I'd be all for it. I fly my Ju-87G-1 pretty low these days 8)

lol.. As I haven't bought a tank or infantry game I can't be arsed about the grass.. it's not important really.. Now, better and realistic improved cockpits, new aircraft.. well, now we are talking!

You think it will affect the fps? At any rate i would really love to see it moving ...Smile

it's could be a great idea to replace some old 3d model (trucks, tanks,...) with the hi-res ones of TOW

I've never tried it so i don't know the definite answer. But the two games use the same engine and file formats so theoretically it would be possible to migrate objects from one to the other. Not just vehicles but buildings, trees, maps, human figures, planes, guns, sounds... I don't see a reason why it wouldn't be possible.

It would be very neat if it was possible because my impression is that with ToW they managed to stretch the capabilities of the Il-2 engine a bit further so incorporating their changes in the game would give us something between the current Il-2 and the SoW - which certainly would be a neat thing, especially with all the delays with the SoW development. Maybe that is the reason for Oleg refusing to implement many of the features requested and recommended by the community - the famous "it's impossible" line - which the modding community managed to unlock, the Il-2 engine is a bit dated but i feel there's quite a bit more to be squeezed out of it and we're just scrathing the surface here so maybe Oleg fears his new product won't look so spectacular in comparison if Il-2 has all those bells and whistles too.

Well said,

IL2 was a dying patient in coma with a rare exotic disease until the Wonder Cure (MODERS) was at hand and the patient was revived!! The patient registered higher vital signs compared to it's previous (before coma) life and amazed the Medical community .... Smile

Now what Oleg needs to do to impress us it to really go for broke and give us everything 10 fold and ten times better !! "Now top that if you can" sort of thing ....

That means that we are in a WIN - WIN situation regardless the outcome ...Smile

Personally i believe that Moders have given to this game a 10 year life expansion to say the least..

I raise my glass for the Moders !!

Anyone knows how to use those odd-named files that the SFS Extractor utility creates? The models in this game look REALLY good and would be a great addition to Il-2! I can recognize a few that were directly copied over, but they added tons of new ones to them. I would like to see if i can port a model from one to the other and vice versa, so if any of the modding gurus has some advice i'm all ears...

OK i found an utility that extracts the ToW SFS files. It seems that the formats are slightly different - the ToW models seem to have more mesh files, and also the unit data is somewhat different. If someone among the modding gods here is interested in taking a look i might zip up some and email it...

The vehicles would certainly be a great addon to il-2, to give more variety to the possible targets for ground pounding missions. French and Polish tanks, more German vehicles, artillery pieces...
