Guys, I have played IL2 since the original and have loved the game.
I've bought many joysticks, rudder pedals, all versions of Track IR and upgraded my PC more times than I care to remember to keep up to speed with this game.
Then, about a year-and-a-half ago, things at 1C went quiet as they moved into full production of their MIA BoB:SoW, it will come, but when? Who knows?
Then came the 'terrible' news that the sfs files had been cracked, by those 'meddling kids'...nooooo, the game was going to be porked/hacked/unplayable...those terrible, terrible hackers!
In fact, as is always the way, it was and is very short-sighted scare-mongering. I understand the concern for online play, but it does seem that most servers and players have stuck to the modded and un-modded servers, and I think this comes from a maturity shown by most flight-sim enthusiasts.
So "The Mod!"
Well, after posting numerous requests for enhancements on the Oleg's Ready Room forum, all of which have been ignored because "the sounds are hard-coded", "it's not possible to do that", "we cannot model that plane due to legal problems", etc, etc. Well what happens?
A group of good-for-nothing hackers (their words, not mine), come along and say "hey you know what? This can be done"
So over the last year we've seen exhaust flames from engine start-up, tyre screech on landing, a huge amount of engine sounds added, new maps with correct names+loads in development, cockpits (ok not all historic) added to planes so that B-17 ' (one of the most requested patch additions) and B-24's can be flown, cockpits added to 'non-flyable' planes, gun-smoke from firing 50-cals, cloud-layers, smoke draw distance increased and improved looks for it too, detailed cockpits being created for planes that 'can't be done', for me the P-47 is at last getting the make-over it has long deserved with accurate gunsite and new meshes and TGA files for the interior.
These are all being done by guys who have a passion for the game, which I feel left 1C a long-time back.
I have posted this thread just to say a great big thanks to all those involved in the modding community, for bringing IL2 back to the status it deserves, and spending time in listening to other enthusiasts on this forum (and others), who when it comes down to it, don't hate IL2 and so they want to hack it, but they love IL2, and want it to be the best it can be.
So Ladies and Gents......S! and may your work continue unchallenged and with the support of the community behind you.
Cheers, SM
