Display drivers stop working, then recover
#1

Twice today this has happened. Both times, when the sim has not been heavily taxed- once on a 2 on 1 fight with about 100 objects and perhaps 2 dozen vehicles on the ground, and the last time, when one single plane crashed- and this was after the 12 on 36 fight, with explosions, planes burning, etc

My PCI E card's fan is running. The only thing I've done today is used Avala's "Planeshine" mod. I will try deactivating it, but it's hard to tell if this is the cause, as now I want something NOT to happen

Any additional advice?

Same thing was happening to me. I got an 8800GTS card and on max settings the game looks absolutely stunning - no stutter, nothing - but after a while the display drivers would start crashing. The first few time i could recover by alt-tabbing out of the game and then back again, but soon it would freeze up completely and i would be forced to reboot.

I had to take down the details a bit and disable hardware shaders. That's what solved it finally, now the game runs without a problem - but it doesn't look as good as it used to. You can't have everything, i guess...

bad news- this is happening on more than just Il2

Had an OpenGL dll crash just now that closed Il2 (in the middle of a mission of course). Had a similar crash earlier with a different game

Perhaps it's a driver issue?

Could be. But then again, I have had no driver issues on this card since August, when I installed it new. I had not introduced new drivers and then this happened- I'm using the same drivers since forever on this card. I had never even updated drivers, at any time

My GPU fan is 224 rpm, which I suspect is part of the problem. I do not know what the typical GPU fan speed is (and I know diameter is a factor) but 224 rpm seems slow

Could be a heat issue, the 8800's are notorious for running hot, mostly because the fan is set to turn slowly, about 20 to 25% of its capacity. This keeps everything quiet, but hot. You can use RivaTuner to adjust the fan speed, most people report 60% to be a good compromise between fan noise and good cooling.

Maybe...I have tried Rivatuner. It will not actually let me change fan speed. I do exactly what is called for, but no profile I launch or make actually runs. I can make three or more step profiles no problem; they just never run. I cannot even set the constant speed at all, either. I'm thinking there's some Vista compatibility issues

I had thought it was mod related at first, but this problem crops up on more programs than just Il2

One problem is my CPU- it's sometimes running at 63% while I am not actively using the PC, just as it sits running windows. And I suspect that some Vista updates I have installed are compounding the issues

I am calling some PC repair places tomorrow to inquire about a fresh WinXP install with my PC and getting rid of Vista. I'm mentally preparing myself to burn my skinning templates to DVD and send the PC out. I am tired of fighting for the privilege of controlling my PC. I cannot even disable Diskeeper on my startup menu without Vista telling me I must undo the changes or else run only in diagnostic mode. My time spent fixing this is costing me more than a new PC. About 8 grand more in fact, because I am supposed to be prepping and selling a car in my "real world" life

Ok.. Could be an issue with your PSU.. Something similar happened to me awhile back, and one of our IT guru's told me to try upgrading my PSU because he said it sounded like it was on it's way out..
I tried everything else with no effect, so I bought a more powerful PSU with a 600w output, installed it and hey presto, he was right!
It's all trial and error when trying to track these faults down I know, but your problem sounds like the one I was having.
See if you can at least borrow a better spec PSU and test it out..

That is very slow and usually detects that something is wrong with graphic card or fan on it in every way.

Do you know what is your graphic card and what driver do you use? Sometimes things like that can be solved with just changing the driver.

I would also suggest to come back to WinXP, this is not first time that I hear for problems with CPU’s with Vista.

That is good card, but I doubt that you can do something with it with Rivatuner, it is application mostly for overclocking and deblocking shader pipelines, processor etc . . ., and with majority of 8600 gts’s it can’t be done.
50C in idle mode is normal temperature for most graphic cards so Ntune probably eats one “0” when reports about fan speed.

You can try these drivers, I used some of them and while they are very good for performances in games most of them is also very stable, but most stable is of course plane nvidia’s driver.

I would go too for a WinXP, it would be a surprise for Microsoft to release fully functioning product (maybe after some 3 vista updates . . . .  )

i have vista and rivatuner and all other stuff, seems to work fine for me

your fan speed is very low for my taste, it might a bad card that has been very hot when you play that game

i have nVidia 8800GTS 512 with G92 core and i use riva tuner to only adjust fanspeed

How? When I follow the directions to create a profile, there is no "plus" button to set the next step the tutorial calls for, in rivatuner.

I can set a constant fan speed all day long. When I click apply, the fan speed will not change. I have followed the tutorial to the letter

huh, thats strange :?

Could be as simple as rivatuner has not been tested thoroughly for my card and driver combo

...or, equally likely, the inside of my computer has a display that looks just like your avatar

I have tried a system restore, original drivers, removed, cleaned, and re-seated card. performance is back to what I remember, but I had some crashes. Played with core.dlls for '46

No crashes. Yet. But the game is playable; I completed three missions. Before I could not
