Land is water, water is land... SOLVED!

Hey,

I appear to be having a little oddity concerning what the game sees as land and water. I think fabianfred had a similar (or same) problem a few weeks back.

Certain areas of my landmasses allow me to place moving ships on them in FMB but don't allow the placement of moving vehicles. Conversely, I have areas of water that won't allow the placement of moving ships but will allow the placement of moving vehicles..

I can't work out what's wrong. My map_c is all correctly set up, map_t is fine, map_h is fine too. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this? Fabianfred- did you ever get yours sorted?

No...still got it....but I cannot place ships ANYWHERE........
vehicles/armour can start in the sea and go anywhere, but their waypoints 'bend' around high ground...much as ship ones do normally when too close to the coast

trains can cross water too...without bridges

I started from scratch again yesterday to sort out a mis-alignment of water/height/textures...and am now back to where I left off....but still no ships

Oh well, it is a flight sim

Are the water areas on your map_h pure black? as in RGB=0,0,0?

This has prompted me to check my map again.
No problem plotting ship routes in the narrow waters of WesterSchelde but shallow water areas are avoided by the route line.

Most obvious error is not to have RGB 0,0,0 on map_c. Map_h doesnt affect ships. You can raise the water surface to create a "bubble" by adjusting heights but ships will still navigate through staying at zero height.

When using FMB Mission Editor there seems to be some sort of shallow water proximity effect which influences route lines. Maybe there has to be a minimum width of RGB 000 pixels to plot a route?

I'll check that all my water is pure 0.0.0 on map_c.

That doesn't explain why some areas of land aren't usable by vehicles though. Unless they have to be pure 255,255,255 to work. I guess I'll be checking carefully when I get back from work today.

Thanks

I thought that i was the only one. My Laplands map has the same problem. Cant put ships near coasts. (about 100 meters)It was so frustrating that i gave up. I never finished my map. And , yes rgb 0+ map_t is OK too... Cry
Havent tested with trains in the sea yet!

Solved it!

It's ed_map_t.tga that controls what ships and vehicles consider land and water.

Just copy your map_t and rename it and it will work.

I discovered it when I remebered that I expanded my map but didn't expand my ed_map_t because I didn't think it had a function. The areas that didn't work were those that were new areas.

So, all sorted now Smile

Could you please test if the same works for inland bodies of water, like lakes or rivers, that have an elevation? This is so that floatplanes could be made to take off/land on these too, not just oceans. And also it would be neat having riverine gunboats duke it out

Wow, that would be cool to bring the water right up to the beach for landing craft, etc. At least near target areas.

Exactlly, Someone should test if inner rivers can be made Sailable by merchant ships. Tehre are lots of ports that are up river. Maybe from the Map T they culd be adjusted to work and have moving traffic on rivvers and shalow areas.
The con should be that veicles would no t be abel to get near this areas, but its a reonable proce for places like teh SSlot, or Areas with big deltas.

It's under [TMAPED] in load.ini... always wondered what it was for...
So it just needs to be a copy of map_t.tga?

Brilliant discovery !!!!!
