Mig cockpits, rocket dispersion...
#1

Hello,

The two gun Mig-3s (2xUB and 2xShvak) were made using the Mig-3U cockpit (which has gauges for two guns). Unfortunately the exterior and interior views don't match.

Could someone release a patch which replaces the cockpit for these two aircraft with the one from the Mig-3 1940/Mig-3UD?

Also, do you know if it is possible to give other rockets dispersion? The 60lb rockets should have around eight mils. of dispersion and the Russian rockets should have sixteen mils. It would also be neat to have the R4M fire off in six or twelve rocket salvos (historical).

If you guys ever figure out how to edit loadouts I have a few corrections to suggest...

get the rm4s to fire 4 at a time, i never get a hit wth 1st shot and that shot wastes all the missiles

I remember that you could fire the R4Ms in salvos in the old days...

You could fire them in pairs.

(I never got the weapon classes to recompile but I managed to recompile AI files - so I started working on those ~ but its a tricky area to work in)

I managed to make the a patch that changes the mig cockpits btw.

I don't support editing weapons but I used QTims tools to remove everything from the mod except the rocket inaccuracy and it is wonderful.

As for the cockpits: If you look at the external 3d models there are actually three different kinds of canopy frame while there are only two different kinds of internal cockpit models. For the Migs with only two guns I preferred the original cockpit with its worse visibility. Ideally, I would have added a square glass plate but I didn't know where to find the components to add to the *.him file.

In real life some two gun mig-3s did have the later canopy (and the field mods probably didn't). The actual Mig-3s were a range of different production lines and field modifications which could combine a wide range of features, so its not any easy topic to sort out. There were even a few prototypes combining rockets and gunpods with the Mig-3U type of canopy...

Ideally there should be a new slot with an AM-38 field mod that has the air-to-ground weapons as these aircraft certainly existed according to Oleg's data.

I had the impression, since virtually the entire Soviet bomber force was destroyed by the Luftwaffe within the first three weeks of Barbarossa, but as the assault on Moscow approached and German aircraft serviceability and availability plummeted, the VVS re-equipped many of its fighters as fast ground support aircraft. It is said on the Moscow Front alone there were as many aircraft as the entire German Eastern Front, operating from good fields.

It seems the early Yak, Lavochkin and MiG were fitted with bombs or rockets at this time.

Certainly I understand there was no genuine standardisation of "a MiG-3 model A1" as such. In the field each MiG could have a different engine, armament, canopies, even wings. Only the basic airframe was generally common (alongside MiG-1's and on the carousel goes). It's a good idea to have ground attack layout with the AM-38, but I have to wonder how standardised such a layout might've been. It seems MiGs were a bit of a hodgepodge with all sorts of customisations, and then in the winter of 41 everything was fitted for ground attack. By late 42 however the numbers of specialised, new ground attack types were finally back up and their models sorted.

Just some random thoughts. I like the idea too.

Well the Il-2 object viewer suggests "5-20 units" may have been switched to AM-38 field mods across all regiments. Presumably some of these would be 1941 models equiped for ground support.
