why do skinners mark their skins per country with numbers?

I don't understand why skinners mark their skins?

The program does this according to other entry fields is there a reason for it?

Probably didn't explain this well enough..

I DL some skins, and some have country logo/marker and a number on the aircraft.

In IL2 program there is no way to not select a country, so always the country logo/marker is written over by the program. Often not a very good match from what I've seen.

If the aircraft is already marked with Soviet Red Star and Number when I go into IL2 to select Aircraft for Online it puts another Red Star beside or ontop of the original. ALso a number is assigned and placed on aircraft.

I DL some that have no markings. I guess if I'm flying one of the Soviet Marked SKins on my aircraft, and I want to fly Allied USA I have one red star and one blue star. LOL

Anyway I was just wondering why not all unmarked skins. Then when player selects aircraft from within Il2 the markers and numbers assigned by IL2 look alot better.

I have probably missed something here. LOL

OK, let's see if I can get through this correctly.

If you select multiplayer and a dogfight map there is no option in the arming screen to turn markings off so you get the default markings even if you select a skin from your library, thus two sets of markings.

If you select multiplayer and coop there is an option in the arming screen to turn markings off so the default ones do not show and the making put on by the skin maker will be the only one there

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, hope so.

Also in Dogfigth mode you can choose the country "none" that will not display any numbers or arkings.

And most skinners try to represent a particular palne with all of its markings, realisticlly while the game asigns generic markings that are ussually the wrong format too, or in the wrong place. When I do skins I try to give the user the option, I do Marked skins and unmarked skins to use as you please. But ussually skins are like a pice of art an represent one particular historic plane, with not onlly correct numbers and markings but you will probably fingd the correct license or factory number on it, plus service markings in hatches and openings...

Then aggain some onlly want to get the markings rigth, since Il-2 engine does not do a good job with it.

To answer your question as to why we do it, its because the game by default has really dreadful looking markings, and since many squadrons that operated certain types are NOT represented in the game, its much easier to apply it directly to the aircraft and make it look as though it was part of it, rather that just slapped over top of it.

Many skinners often include blank versions of their skins, just so you can use the default in game crappy markings if you feel like it.

imo one of the worst things a skinner can do is to invest a lot of time in one skin and then only publish a marked version which only can used as a single / personal skin because it looks weird if all the planes have for example the nr 23 on them or all got gruppencommandeur markings

people with il-2 mat manager tend to go for the total blank skins, people using the stock markings often prefer using generic, marked (stars only) skins - I had lot of such additional requests

I prefer total blanks with random numbering and markings provided by mat manager

You can always select "Country: NONE" to avoid double markings. And most skinners put markings on the aircraft to give it a more realistic and authentic look. The default game markings do look crummy, like some stenciled on spray paint someone painted in about 15 seconds...

+1. I've seen so many great skins that would be perfect as new default if only they came with a 'blank' version. Some of them can be quickly edited to 'erase' the historical markings, but most aren't. I also don't see the point of 'unnumbered' skins which still sport the nationality markings. MAT Manager lets you turn roundels off, but the settings will apply to all aircraft of the same nationality, so you need to go for either a full roundels skinset or the opposite, but not both at the same time.
Sometimes some blanks are also so 'blanked' they become pointless. I'm thinking of Hungarian, Romanian or French skins with painted rudders that come with unpainted rudder blank versions which are unusable for defaults as even MAT Manager won't add the painted rudders.

Sometimes the only way is to get the paintbrushes out and do some copy/paste to get what you need...

Cheers

By default, IL-2 Mat Manager also gives better looking markings over the original game's hideous ones. Some skinners standardize their releases by providing marked and unmarked. I use IL-2 MAT Manager and use unmarked skins for use online (you can't turn on/off markings in MP, only in single-player).
