Advanced tweaks for IL2 stutter/FPS problems.

nearmiss Wrote:Got to thinking about all this and wondering what is the purpose of using the resolution that your monitor supports?

Currently using an X800 card, AMD 3700+ 64bit, 2 gig ram

Move resolution in conf.in back to 1024x768 turned off the perfect landscape and bumped up my FPS 20+

The screen looks the same, except the text on the screen is kinda big.

Maybe this will screw up the monitor or something.

If anyone knows of something this might harm in my system, or if it won't work well then I'm ready to read what you have to say.

Otherwise, to heck with it. If the FPS can be bumped up this significantly it makes sense to do it.

A new computer is planned nearterm, but I'm in no hurry at this point.

I forgot to mention my monitor is a X241W = 24"LCD Monitor

Changing the width = 1920 x height = 1200 (native resolution) The FPS drops 20+ points to around 15-17 FPS vs 38-40 FPS @ 1024x768

Not arguing here by any means. I would love to have it work at higher FPS in 1920x1200 res.

I also did all the changes in the conf.ini you recommend on first posting. ALso, disabled the Vertical sync.

BigSilverHotdog Wrote:too-cool just follow the guide, 9600 works the same as the 8800 for IL2 purposes... not too surprising since they are basically the same architecture in different scale.

Edit: Changing the resolution lower makes the game less sharp and defined, and if you have a LCD flat panel and you don't run in native resolution the monitor has to scale the picture, resulting in less definition (sharpness).

For best results always run at the resolution your monitor was designed for. You don't have to chop down resolution to get good framerates if you follow my guide.

Thanks Bigsliverhotdog for the fast reply, I have a team mate who's having problems with frame rate using vista and a 8800gt/512mb core 2duo cpu 2.6GHz 2 or 3 gb's ram 500gb HD, can't seem to get more than 15fps in perfect mode and about 19-21 other wise. Going to direct him to this post and you with his problem, maybe you can help him in some way. Too-Cool

Vista doesn't play nice with openGL, don't expect good performance. I do not support anyone using Vista (for far more reasons than just IL2) and cannot help him in any way beyond the original tweak post. My advice? Go back to XP.

Nearmiss: You did all the tweaks, including specular tweaks, update your ATI drivers, and turn off shaders? Are you using Vista? You have a very poor IL2 setup but it should be possible to get the framerate playable even at 1920x1200. Are you using newer graphic DLLs for il2? You shouldn't be if you are. I need more details before I can help you. Also about your monitor you listed 1920x1200 which is widescreen, your monitor is widescreen correct? 1024x768 is not a widescreen resolution and therefore everything in the game will be stretched flatter unless you have aspect ratio locked in drivers.

I followed you first posting on this thread and the above posting.

ALso, WinXP Pro SP 2 and the ATI 8.4 drivers for x800 GTO PRO 256MB VC.

Using BlackDeath.trk as benchmark

Resolutions I tried:

1680x1050-----Avg 19 Max 55 Min 5
1440x900-------Avg 25 Max 55 Min 10
1280x800-------Avg 29 MAX 55 Min 12

1024x768-------Avg 35 Max 55 Min 17

I used Enditall2 and closed almost all services along with Virus and Spyware scanners

It sounds like a severe CPU limitation, but that doesn't make sense because the 3700 is not that bad of a CPU. I used to use that exact one (Windsor core, 2.2ghz, right?). Something seems off.

Any ideas?

Would some bios info help?

I'm using an ASROCK 949-Sata2 mobo with PCI-E Video card.

Hmmmm this is a tough one. Can you please run 3Dmark 03 or 05 and post your complete results so I at least know your system is running properly. If your score is within reasonable parameters, the problem is obviously with IL2 or something related to openGL in windows. (or it could just be that your computer is typically slow with IL2 and I've just forgotten how badly it runs on that combination... possible)

I'd also like a complete spec sheet for your PC, just list it like I'm listing mine here:

CPU: Q6600 @ 3.2ghz
MOBO: ABIT IP35-PRO @ 400 FSB (x4)
MEMORY: GEIL DDR2 800 @ 1:1 FSB
VIDEO: MSI GEFORCE 8800 GT OC @ 700/1000
SOUND: TURTLE BEACH SANTA CRUZ
MONITOR: 22" WIDESCREEN 1680x1050
OS: WinXP SP2
PSU: 600w OCZ

Those are wrong scores for a X800 GTO. Something is crippling your performance. You should be getting 6-9k for 3dmark03 and 4-5k for 3dmark05.

Please download and run CPU-Z and GPU-Z and take screenshots of them (all tabs in CPUZ) and then post them here.

Edit: Acer makes awesome LCD screens don't they? My 22" wide is Acer and my wife's 20" wide is Acer also. We don't buy anything else anymore.

I'm not sure this is your problem but your memory (or the configuration thereof) looks flakier than 6 kinds of unholy hell. 130mhz? Thats not even a proper memory divisor, but probably possible. So you're saying you're running 260 DDR? What is that, PC2085? Am I missing something? If you have PC3200 it should be 200. (2x200 = 400 DDR) Have you set custom memory timings?

Again, I'm not sure this is your problem, but definitely something to look into. Your motherboard is pretty seriously low end so you might be limited by that ALI chipset... oh yeah you've got one of the early ASROCKs -- i read something recently about that brand being manufactured in the same place as a bunch of those PCCHIPS disasters (perhaps yours is one rebadged?). Maybe look on the board to see if some of the chips are colored on with crayon, or perhaps the heatsinks are made of some type of edible rice compound?

Seriously though except for the memory issue everything appears to be in order. I'll post again later with some more questions and ideas, but for now, see if you can clear up the memory thing or maybe explain what I've missed.

Edit: On doing the math for the memory frequency I notice that the math works but the setting seems wrong. Is that setting actually FSB for you? CPU/17 (2.2ghz / 17 = 1.294 or something) would make sense but I can't remember what the default FSB is for those older single core 64s (plus you gotta remember the CPU bus and the system bus run at different speeds) -- Ach, I'm too used to the simplicity of life with a Q6600. Oh before we move too far away, did you run 3dmark03 at the default settings? Running at your custom resolution (1920x1200) is obviously going to kill your score.

the 3Dmark03 & 05 defaults to 1024x768 and I cannot change it with the free version.

I did change some things in the BIOS. I took the post above and replaced the Images with the new values in the CPU-Z and GPU-Z

Then I ran the

3Dmark03 = 4335
3Dmark05= 3129

Not much improvement in either.
