Flames at the exhaust at night
#1

Is it possible to change the "smokes effects" mod that changes the smoke and makes flames coming out of the exhaust at startup to be permanently at night conditions, to have better visibility of planes in the night for "Nachtjagd"?! Sorry for my poor english.

Greetings

I like this idea, but most nightfighters and nightbombers had exhaust dampers to disperse the flames and reduce this effect. Do you think they'd cancel out?

Checkyersix is correct, most aircraft designed for night operation had some sort of baffling system or long exhaust pipes or shrouds to hide most of the flames coming through the system. Another problem is that with any flame visible at night with a computer flight sim will probably be visible in bright daylight as well.

but there were still flames even you had flame dampers, but maybe just a little ones

Scaled down versions of the jet exhausts maybe?

bump, guess that's the most accurate exhaust flames we can get. Now if only someone could do the magic... imagine night fighters chasing bombers....yummmmm Smile

WWII fighters and the Realair Spits do a great job of exhaust flame at night..
And just a point, the masking of exhausts for single engined british fighters at night, was mainly for the pilots benefit, as Hurricane and Spit pilots would be virtualy blinded due to the position of the exhaust stacks in front.. A masking plate was used to shield the glare for subsequent nightfighter aircraft..
There are also many accounts of nightfighters being vectored close enough to enemy aircraft until they are close enough to get a visual.. usualy by all accounts when they pick up the exhaust signature..

There's a good pic of a hurricane on this site somewhere, showing the 'shield' plate. Quite a simple, yet effective modification Smile

anyway, be nice to see some exhaust flame @ night.... perhaps, it could be linked to the Time of Day, like the contrails are set to altitude... maybe... or come on when the cockpit lights are turned on... or something...

yes! I noticed that the contrail are very bad quality in the game, they are just 2D rendered multiple of times

Maybe you could swap the nav lights for mini jet exhaust and relocate them to the engine. That way they'd only come on at night. Have to map each aircraft differently though...
