North Atlantic Map WIP
#1

So I have decided to create a map. I want to create a North Atlantic type map for Coastal Command and other such sea missions.

Here is the first round of questions for Fly_zo and the other experts....

I modded my bldconf.ini and conf.ini to enable the map building options in FMB and all seems to be working well. My question is....How do I create land masses and topographical land marks? I have seen other posts of people making almost "nagative" images of the map they are building to get started. What do I have to do to create the land masses? Do I have to create a tga file of some sort if I want to start from scratch?

... land/water areas are handled via map_c.tga (+map_c.tga_table) files

map_c.tga is 8bit grayscale tga file dissected into 32pix rows and sorted by formula ( map_c.tga_table)

you need mapC tool for composing map_c.tga into editable tga ....

but lets start from beginning ....

You are creating new map ( not modding one of default ones ) right ?

If you looking for authentic map best way is to generate map files from satellite images

Microdem is app that most of us are using

so get excellent ClockWatchers tutorial and all stuff you'll need for it :

(The link is inoperative)

to get all default map files along with textures d/l QTim's sfs extractor ( Tims tools AAA section)

into sfs extractor installation folder ( where sfs.exe is ) put this filelist.txt :

http://rapidshare.com/files/98815518/filelist.rar.html

extract all mapsxxx.sfs files ( from game root) into one folder and you should get all files with right game structure present ....

---------------------------

mod structure :

maps mods location :

game root\MODS\MAPMODS\maps\ "your map folder"

file that contains list of maps which game loads is: all.ini (editable via notepad)

game root\MODS\MAPMODS\maps\all.ini

all.ini structure:

name of your map ... name of folder/ name of load.ini

example:

for new map :
mrz_Malta mrz_Malta/load.ini

for modded default game map :
tab_ardennes ardennes/tab_load.ini

this should keep you busy for few days

Wow, you should model atlantic Canada... such as NFLD or Nova Scotia! There was quite a bit of
U-boat kills via RAF, RCAF costal command...Not to mention the many europe bound convoys you'll be escorting, as far as greendland...

I hope you take that approach...

How can I turn this map into something I can use in MicroDEM?

I know the map is not correct but I wanted to at least do an experiment to try and get somehting working while trying to figure out the file structure.

..well, im not sure .... which format is that map (extension) ? we all are using srtm files ( satellite images) with microDEM

so i suggest you do the same ....

select area you want at this site and get all srtm files needed ( just click them on the map greed ...make sure multiple selection is enabled)

http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/SELECTION/inputCoord.asp

merge them in microDEM and edit as CW explains in tutorial ( make sure you have his color data tables installed )

later on you can crop it in graphic editor to get desired area .....

Just to let you all know....

I am discontinueing work on this map. With the birth of my fourth son yesterday, and doing all of the skinning and hosting for my squad, I simply do not have time to learn the file structure and all of the anomolies therein. I hope to one day find the time to learn map building, but in my present situation, I simply cannot. i oppologize for any inconvience. I thought this map would have been great for some of the Coastal Command and Naval junkies here at AAA.

Again, Im sorry
