I just tried numerous take offs in a spit HFMkIXe, a spit LFMkIXe and a spit MkIXe. In every case with the HF and the LF as soon as the planelifted off it would bank sharply to the left an crash even when I gave full right stick and rudder. every time with the MkIXe however take off was normal. Can anyone explane why it seems to be impossible to take off with the Spit HFMkIXe and the LFMkIXe?

ah! reinstall the gyro mod, i think that it should work, i have had this problem before

Thanks GK, you pointed me in the right direction. I used mod switcher to start an unmodded version 4.08 and tried the take offs and the problem was gone. Now here is the strange thing. When I switched back to the modded version and tried again the problem was still gone so all seems back to normal. I have no idea why this should be so but I am just keeping my fingers crossed that it remains so.
