AI unlimited climb

Has anyone been able to work out getting the AI to stop their persistence to climb rather than engage?

Several years ago Oleg made a statement that the only difference between Ai abilities ,ace - rookie. Is that in the ace setting the ai is "more observant". But it seems that in all settings their favorite tactic is to climb forever, very annoying. :x Epically considering the ai don't observe their aircrafts limits.

Any work being done on this?

So yes, I agree...
The AI have many odd behaviors... I especially dont like how they exhaust all their ammo easily!!!
I also dont like how I can bank, just oh so slightly, and they will miss me and not even correct their fire... It just an endless stream of bullets and a real waste of ammo!!

i hate that, and why AI is all seeing 6 o'clock, through wings and belly never is caught by surprise, will be great to model AI behaviors, some one with programing skills can take a look and see if it's possible to create a more human AI.

i also hate the stupid "ok, cant fire, traversin onto enemy"
it take too long to turn an i usually only survive if personally controll rear gunners

also the guns aim sucks and why do they fire in bursts
i say fire constant till no ammo !!!!then die!!!

the AI in the game is dumb and stupid. Period


want a fix for that

oh actually you can install a mod for 3.04 AI or something like that

Sorry guys to bust your party here, but for better AI we would need a damn good programmer who also happens to be a modder. And then be able to understand the logic of how the game works with the AI and re-setup the whole thing.
I guess better AI would be possible, but for a non-developer of the game (and even for the original ones) it would be horribly time-consuming, and the computer power needed to run such an AI would be dramatically increased, maybe on the level that top-of the line PCs would only be able to run a flight of four or so on an empty map.

But of course i am happy to be proven wrong on all that.

OK, i know that was mean, but you guys really need to think and consider some things before you make such requests out of another world.
BTW i don't want to sound too authorative here, have fun anyway guys. Just some (mildly) educated guesses here. Smile

Today pc's are more than capable to manage an inproved AI, remeber the original model for this AI was made on 2001 or before and then just upgraded a bit, a new AI wouldn't be a FPS killer in this sim.

I FIND THEY DO THE OPPOSITE... they fire non-stop when banking just slightly to evade... Its an endless stream of bullets, and they dont correct their fire... They have some sort firing circle or firing definition, and when you enter and leave it briefly, I think thats where you are getting the impression that they only do it in bursts... its way off!!

Agreed... When I played IL2 for the first time I had a PIII 800mhz, geforce 3 64mb, maybe a 20 gig HD, and about 128mb ram... I now have probably 6 times that power, and the dual core helps...

Just saddle up to the BOB II WOV is you want to see what can be done with AI. The BOB II has gotta be the benchmark for AI peformance for WW2 air combat sims at this time.

The AI performance in the BOB is terrific, but it gets boring flying British Aircraft (early war) that sputter and have minimal firepower. The Luftwaffe side is more interesting.

The Landscapes are flat and pretty boring for the most part in BOB II and there are few raised objects.

Regardless, if you are flying above 1500 meters the AI performance makes up for a lot missing elements in the old rewored sim.

The AI peformance is constantly be upgraded in the sim as well. The Merlin AI engine is a creation of the Shockwave team, and currently the AI performance is a work in progress.

I don't anything to do with the BOB II WOV. I recommend it, because I'd like to see much more proficient AI performance in all CFS. Also, I don't want to sound too critical, because the BOB II WOV is a competent CFS.

Currently, I see it as the best Offline CFS you can play. I kinda regreat Oleg is doing the same war theatre thing. I've been doing the BOB II for over 2 years now... so I'd like a change of scenery, etc.

So... there is hope, fly ONLINE and join Coops or squadrons and fly with some purpose. If you just want to hug the deck and swirl like a dervish fly alone in the fly and fight servers.

Hopefully, Oleg is well advised of what is needed by now to make the BOB SOW a viable CFS. I think he must have been finished with the Graphic stuff long ago, and now he's having to work through difficult Physics and ai performance programming.

I agree on all points... It can be done, and I wish it was done... BoBII should be the benchmark for all WWII AI, its amazing the things and surprises they have done with that particular AI... They still catch me of guard, and make me surprised by their abilities.. They are very authentic indeed... and you are right, the landscape in that sim is a real immersion killer Sad

And yes, IL2's AI does suck! I have read quotes from Oleg over the years claiming that his AI is the industries best and that it has AI routines which are very sophisticated, yet I cannot ever find a peep or a comment of what he thinks of BoB II WOV...

I find the AI very predictable and scripted a lot of the time...However, when I havent played it for months and I pick it up again a lot of that dissolves, and I do find them challenging... but give me a week and I am bitter about all the cheats that they use...

Honestly speaking, not trying to wreck anyones dream or such.

The AI perforance in IL2 series is what it is. There are to be no more improvements in the programming of AI - coming from 1C:Maddox.

The strength of the IL2 series game always has been the Online game playing against live people to do air combat simulation with human intelligence. Since Artificial Intelligence (AI) is only meant to simulate expected human behaviours then Online Play is the only venue for best game play, if realism is important to you.

The BOB II WOV has the most competent AI performance of any CFS I'm aware at this time. In fact, a 2.08 release is available now, which is not the complete 2.o8 release but does give the current AI performance changes. The BOB II WOV has an AI Peformance engine, which allows the developers to do some exceptional things with the AI as compared to competitive software.

It is just a fact, AI performance is critical to Offline play. If you have a lousy AI performance in offline play it will be difficult to maintain much interest for long. AI performance can never fully simulate human behaviour, but when you toss in some probabilitic responses you can come very close.

Irrational behaviour is what humans display most...especially in stress situations.

If Oleg doesn't competently address AI performance it's not the end of the world. We know he can produce the best ONLINE game.

If you desire best AI performance you need to give up the Offline game and join into the ONLINE game. If things don't suit you there maybe you'll have what it takes to help build scenarios that are immersive and realistic to suit your tastes for air combat... while playing against real people.
