Request for Help: Yak-1
#1

Hi All,

Just want to bump this old request.... It seems to me that the 3D modding skills on display now show that some of you out there in AAA land can do this project. Please help!

What we really need [as opposed to yet another absurd Luft-46 contraption] is a proper Yak-1. Ok, proper and proper-- the in-game model is suitable for a few early machines. It is NOT suitable, however, for the vast majority of actual Yak-1s. We need the version with the half-round cut-outs in the turtledecking (a la the LaGG-3) as an absolute priority. Ok, yes, the Yak-1 model is rather poor. I am not asking anyone to try to fix it and all the many-fold inaccuracies! Just the rear cockpit bit; that is all and I will be satisfied for now [when we can edit/import msh files, I'll make an entirely new 3d model].

Why is this so urgent? Firstly, we can add the missing three major versions of the Yak-1 which do not exist in IL2 (and obviously should):

Yak-1 massovij
Yak-1 M-105PF
Yak-1 oblegchennij

Also, we could add a fourth not-so-common version: Yak-1 obl.-okhotnikij with some hier.him work (even I can do that).

The significance of the three missing main Yak-1s should be obvious-- they were the main versions in use before the Yak-1b. Their performance is much better than the early, immature, highly imperfect and over-weight version in the game (which probably explains why 1C put it there). Additionally, we cannot now skin virtually any ace's Yak-1, since we lack the correct versions. The new 3D modification would permit, just for starters, proper and HUGELY requested skins for:

Baranov
Lityvak
Korobov
Avdeev
Pavlov
Eremin
Makarov
Fedoseev
Maksimov
Luganskij
Reshetov
Najdonov
Kuznetsov
Sivtsov
Sokolov

...at a pinch! The list could go on for pages... And add to that virtually any female pilot in the 586 IAP, for example, and one can see the scale of the omission in IL2.

Therefore, can someone have a go? This situation is the most pressing I can think of in the sim. I will lavish drawings, photographs and information on anyone willing to tackle this problem!

Help, please!

Only for curioisty, what exactly you need? a 3D rework?

The impression I had spending a few hours at a Russian aviation museum website pretty much reflected the il2 aircraft description. That most of these aircraft, Yaks and LaGG were produced in such varied conditions and significant circumstances, the sheer ultimate scale of the Soviet air forces so immense by the late war and each of these types remaining in production perhaps long after what would have otherwise been the case (and rushed to service in the first place on similar reasoning) that an endless series of variation, modification and customisation, plus regional and industrial differences during series production, that the major types such as the Yak-1 and LaGG-3 were models which were constantly improved and modernised throughout series production. One day a revised surface finish adds 5km/h. Another some Messerschmitt style exhaust manifolding gives another 8km/h. And so on.

The Yak-1 does have a good year worth of service for say, flying a Soviet Pilot Campaign/Career and fighter type choices.

So I'd like to plus 1 the request that we need a couple of more "improved" Yak-1's which definitely reached historical service, featuring streamlining and quality control improvements, albeit at a piecemeal pace until early-43 according to most reports. These would be sort of like "F" and "FN" versions to the La-5 and kind of make a years worth of campaigning a bit more fun. I mean the LaGG has several versions running into 1943, a few changes since 1941 so let's see some "series 35" Yak-1's too. Otherwise generally it's just smarter to switch to LaGG as soon as they get the leading edge slats and take La-5/F/FN until 1944 before you jump in a Yak (3 followed by 9U).

I'm all for this idea, the more I think about it. It'd be nice to play around more with the early Yaks, but once again with that Yak-1 it's just not smart in 42 and it gets kinda monotonous. Yak-1B is what, November 42? La-5 is the go about then. It's like using a Focke Wulf against the Germans.

I think that the work required would be much less than that on offer, for example, in creating the "Hs 123" or the "Tiger Moth". The turtledecking aft of the sliding canopy needs slight reshaping, and half-round glass areas to be placed therein. Yes, this means to the existing 3D model, in the same way as the aircraft models mentioned.

To expand Vanirs comments, you could equate the lack of these primary Yak-1s as being similar to the sim omitting the Bf 109F model. It would be seen to be unthinkable-- going from the E to the G. And yet, this Russian team has done the same to their own air force!

I think that speaks volumes, personally....

The question is that which other Yak or other russian fighter has the appropriate canopy which could replace the old one? If we know this maybe we could ask Ranwers or Mr.Jolly to schedule it for sometime, I didnt think that its complicated either. I cannot do it otherwise I'd help right now Smile
