Lest we forget....

Poem by Laurence Binyon

Quote:With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is a music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered:
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end they remain.

They shall grow not old....as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them

Pretty emotional words.

This will be another really nice addition to the PTO. Thanks Neil.

Yup. And us dirty ole kiwi's... Its a public holiday. And we tend to get very offended very quickly if anyone downplays its importence....

Yes indeed mate, I haven't forgotten.

I'm an Aussie too and both my grandfathers and a grand uncle were at Gallipoli. I was named after the grand uncle who was killed on the western front later that year (1915) So I'm not likely to forget.

I simply felt that being an international place, the majority of people reading the boards wouldn't get the poems relevance to the thread.

In hindsight I should maybe have added that it might be better to post something up in the announcements forum.

Come to think of it a general thread for Remembrance could be both interesting and educational Idea

Hi Neil,

Great work M8!

Spent 10 years in Darwin, initially in the RAAF, then as a civvy, flew over a lot of it too, your work is very close. I'll look through my photos and other docs and see what I can find to help.

Would love a chance to Beta test it.

Cheers
