ShipPack 1.0

well, many interesting things happened in WWII... once P-39 wing has managed to disable steering and engine of (approx.) 5,000GRT tanker (Baltic Sea)... the vessel didn't sink though but grounded.
...and there was a story re-told zillion times by Black Sea Navy pilots about MBR-2 navigator who shot Bf-109 using flare pistol...
but when I imagine massive sinking of destroyers and cruisers by means of 20mm and .50's in real combat operations (not at firing range)... it reminds me famous discussion on UBI about Mustang-a-tank-buster... sorry.

Plus some 130 US warships were put in dry dock or sunk by kamikaze attacks alone, thousands of servicemen were killed. For morale reasons the event (particularly on the Okinawan approach) was terrifically downplayed by US officials. But I get what you're saying.

I've been hanging for the ship mod to become an executable AAA official mod (I can't get it going with manual editing every time I try...or else I stuff up all other mods installations).

i would like to see any after action report that states a destroyer was sunk by mg or light cannon gunfire.

I'm pretty sure that it took place in the Pacific, but not sure exactly what class of DD it was, or even if it was a DD and not maybe just a DE. Wildcats were the planes that supposedly did this. Granted, it was definitely the exception rather than the rule.

probably the incident you are thinking of would be when Wildcats from VMF-211 hammered the Japanese invasion force at Wake island. They did in fact sink a DD, but it was by dropping bombs and/or setting fire to the fantail where the depth charges were stored.

No .50 or 20mm round is going to threaten a DD's hull. Sure, ill concede that maybe, maybe, a round might have penetrated the hull, certainly they penetrated the superstructure, but lets be realistic here.

I can't even recall an incident where any B-25 strafer sank a DD with gunfire, including those equipped with the 75mm cannon.

Realistically, .50 cal and 20mm gunfire could potentially sink a wooden hulled Jap patrol craft, but seldom did. Thats why PT-Boats in the SWPA shipped a 40mm Bofors on the stern later in the war, and they were only engaging Jap barges.

I fully agree with you, and certainly would not advocate any kind of mod like that for this game. It would be nice though, to see some sort of evidence of damage as a result of some serious strafing attacks by fighters. I believe that there is such a mod available right now, but it conflicts with the Ship Pack mod. I really like the smoke effects that FC has created for this next Ship Pack. Smile

I just recalled another urban...sorry, Navy legend:
new 4x20'mm turret was installed on a destoyer, and tested on another destroyer - the latter was cut in half and sank. I heard the story several times until I met retired officer who served on the ship with that 4x20'. He DID confirm sinking of target ship... but added, she was an old mine sweeper with wooden hull... and it was shooting at point blank range, in calm weather, target ship's engine stopped, etc...

and some more:
I've been on a tanker which was accidentally attacked in Gulf of Aden in 1989 by artillery/missile boats. at least 3x30'mm hit superstructure, leaving huge dents - but no holes. no idea what type of shell it was. and both hull and superstructure was peppered with smaller calibre fire - yeah, too much repainting and a bit ugly look... but nothing critical.
it's interesting also to study reports on Persian Gulf attacks on tankers in 80's-early 90's.
Also many accidents in North Vietnam when US pilots shoot/drop at merchant vessels: one USSR freighter indeed was lost after direct missile hit...crew couldn't contain the fire and had to abandon. There have never been critical damages due to cannon fire.

sorry for 'light' offtoping, but hope it helps to understand.

I need to finish smokestacks for CVLs, I never used 3d modeling stuff before so it takes time and I'm working on new effects too which takes lot of time for testing.

Add to this that I have to work to pay my bills  than it's not that surprising that I'm fast as snail.

I'll try to finish all of that during next week and than you will be able to fly from your carrier, thanks for patience, I never thought it would take me that long.

No worries FC. I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. I'm in no hurry. I just hadn't seen you post in quite a while and was wondering if you were doing OK. Thanks for the reply bud. Smile

I've been under a rock for a while, but I just saw the posts on the CVLs. This will be a great addition to the PTO. It never made much sense to me that the game was shipped with CVs and CVEs without the CVLs, the middleman so to speak.
