Cliffs of Dover, First impressions.
#1

Gents,

Since I have now acquired C.O.D. (CLOD by any other name), I have had a chance to do some testing.
Bear in mind that many of you would have considered my rig as "UBER" before, but I have had to upgrade just to get CLOD working.

My first tests were with Nvidia 8800's in SLI with the same black screen issues that many of you are quoting. Although the game says that it will run on 8800's, I'm here to tell you that it will FLAT OUT NOT RUN with 8800's.
Even my old GTX 295's came up short. I have since upgraded to GTX 460's just to get CLOD working. After the upgrade I was pleasantly surprised to find I could run the game maxed out and still maintain 35+fps while flying in dogfights over London and 60+fps over the water.

My first impressions of the game scream out "ALPHA/BETA" version. If I would have purchased this game off the shelf at the asking price of $49.99 USD, I'd be screaming for my money back right about now.
All Oleg and crew have done is take IL-2, put it into a different engine, added some very nice eye candy and called it COD.

So, I will go into as complete a review as I'm currently able....

First the Good:

1. Very nice cockpit graphics
2. Excellent lighting/shadow effects
3. Much improved AI over IL-2
4. Very nice ballistic effects for projectiles

Now the BAD:

1. After 10+ yrs, they are still using the same lawnmower engine sounds for the planes even after WE, the modding community, have come up with and offered beautifully recreated, and sometimes actual, engine/weapon sounds.
2. Glaring issues with cockpits. ie. Hurricane and Spitfire both have a severe problem with the artificial horizon indicator. At times it will be as much as 45 to 50deg off. A major problem when flying by instruments alone at night or in clouds.
3. Flight models for AI and real life pilots are obviously different. AI are able to do wild maneuvers, that are totally un-achievable by real pilots, even when heavily damaged.
4. Mirrors for planes are useless as there is a major problem with the mirrors. Especially down low. (Looks like T.V. static when reflecting water).
5. Some gauges don't work at all (amp meter for instance).
6. NO REAL MANUAL! For $49.99, I expect to get some kind of PRINTED documentation that tells me how to operate the game and basic operation of the different aircraft, maps, etc.... Not something that is burried so deep within Steam(ing pile of dung) that it takes you 5min just to find it and another 30min to scroll through it to find incomplete information.

and last but surely not least.......

STEAM!

If I wanted some dam program to flash advertisements up at me when ever I go to start my games, I'd go and surf porn sites and let them infect my system.

The best thing I can say about this game is that it looks pretty......
But I can take a big ole pile of horse manure, put in a box, slap a real pretty bow on it and give it to you.

Know what you'd have then......

A real pretty box of ****.

Bottom line, no matter how nicely you dress it up, in it's current state, CLOD isn't worth the money.
Save your pennies for something really nice like DCS A10-C, Rise of Flight, or maybe even a backup copy of IL-2!!!!

S!

"CLOD" is a weird acronym, I guess it's better than "CoD" because it would easily be confused with "Call of Duty"

I don't think any game maker should ever go with Steam, it's a pointless company IMO the only good thing they do is let you download games. I think they, game makers, would actually lose money because no one wants to deal with Steam with frequent long updates, programs that suck the energy out of the CPU and other game critical components, and no way to play games offline.

In regards to Clod,

I hope the game can be fixed, it seems very fixable. The sounds really are inexcusable...supposedly the guy from another title is working to fix them in the next patch (~3weeks?) In 4-6 months, I think this pig will look a little better. Mirrors are broke, Ive disabled mine and pretend they don't exist. (instant +10FPS too)

Dont forget the ground shadows...the ground shadows are terrible...I only try to fly morning and evening to get better results.

I am however, having glimpses of greatness as i fly around and learn the cockpit. There is fun in this sim...you just have to get over the initial SHOCK of the pile of dung they put out. Once you do that, you realize there' s some fun to be had in there. Take a look at this guys videos and you'll see what I mean.

In regards to Steam,
I too came kicking and screaming over to Steam a few years back....literally hated it. But I eventually discovered its totally fine and easy to use. I haven't had a problem with it ever, and dont recall seeing an ad with my current settings. (As soon I changed a few settings) I use a desktop shortcut anyway...don't really see steam too often . Its works perfectly fine for modding too. Ive been it using with Arma2 for years...no problems.

Couldn't agree more!
And the most horrible thing is that technically YOU DON"T OWN the game, Steam does, even though you have payed them your precious cash, they could ban you instantly for all they care.
For some odd reason after installing CoD, trying it out and then quitting until about another 4 patches or whatever were released, then I decided to test if performance was improved, and I was banned!
They required proof of ownership and forced me to waste several days gathering photos etc of the box and the key and blablablabla, finnaly unbanned-BullSh*T!
I only wanted CoD to play offline and I really wish that Maddox would release some sort of super optional patch that you download from their website that absolutely unhooks the game from Steam, but then you can no longer play online, but who cares?-Afterall I never did!

Steam has almost ruined CoD for me. :!:

We had this all - years ago as well. I remember IL-2 without a proper manual and with a lot of errors and rough edges....

And you all are still flying it today! 8)

Just give them a chance and a bit of time. They're working at it and I'm sure it will be a marvelous Sim.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do! Or - when in Russia, do as the Russians do! Mh, have a Vodka.
And in ten years you won't believe these posts here! :Smile)

By the way - did anybody here ever read the Disclaimer of his Software, like Windows Office i.e. he bought?
I think in 90% of all software - it's not your anyway. You might can use it - but it belongs to their Companies..
Do you have a Kindle? Just read the license agreement....

Just think positiv! Wish you all a very nice day!

But it is very hard to be positive when we all know that CoD can work exactly the same without steam...

I "hate" STEAM as well! Downloaded it, installed it and living with it!
What'll you do? Without Steam - no Cliffs over Dover, no CoD without Steam!

Quite simple. You don't like it - give it back! Believe or not - Amazon did return the Money!
Or don't install it and wait... what else can you do!

Enjoy your life!!! Big Grin

I guess it depends on your experience with STEAM. I can't really say anything bad. I know when I first had to use it with HalfLife I wasn't impressed but I was more angry at the perceived inconvenience.
I can honestly say today that I have no complaints and I have dozens of games via STEAM. I don't have to worry about updates etc as they are automatic and I can (and have) easily logged in to STEAM on my laptop and get the same games (provided my laptop has the horsepower to run them, LOL).

I went out and paid $$$ for this as well.

I am in agreement with Jinxx I won't bother to write a review because he has done a perfect description of how I feel about CLOD. (thanx)

Big disappointment.

Had they paid attention to the engine sounds and weapons sounds then I may have been a little less harsh about the game itself. But the STEAM thing put it over the edge. I am still angry over the ads flashing after I get done playing. And it is the sort of thing one would expect, if one were to surf porn sites.....which I do not.....all the time....well maybe ...sometimes.

Time for a Re-do Oleg...and I am a huge fan!

I was really looking forward to clod, but gave it a few months before buying it as i had heard of all the problems folks (who have a hell of a lot more savvy than me, on computers) were having. Now ive got it, and the first downer was Steam, who the last time i used on my computer it got infected by. The second problem problem was the game, I use a quad core with Ge-force 9500gt and where on Il-2 i am getting Fantastic graphics and 65-70 FPS, on clod the graphics are avrage and only 7 FPS ( thats after taking tips and messing with every graphic setting you can think of!!) and you can imagine what its like trying to fly like that.....So im affraid i have had to uninstall clod....But uninstalling Steam thats a whole differant ball game...The ruddy thing refuses to budge.

Back date your PC to a time just before putting on COD and Steam,
that should get rid of it, but if you did anything else like install a mod or a
program after you put on COD it will also take that out as well and you
Will need to reinstall that.
