help with damage textures

Hi all- I'm working on a new damage texture for the hurricane mk. 1, and I've run into a problem. I edited the damage2o.tga to my preferences, but when I use it in-game, all of the nice streaks I added turn into ugly solid black smears. I don't know what is going on. See the pictures for examples- I layered thedamage textures over the default skin/void to show what it looks like. The numbered circled areas correspond in the pictures, i.e. #1 in the damage texture= #1 in the screenshot, just to show a comparison.

the damage texture:

as you can see, I've also edited the skin1o.tgb file to have more and better holes. However, this only works if I first edit one specific .tgb, set that as the default skin, and then use the skinmod to change the default to the skin of my preference. and, the hurricane mk1 is the only plane that I've tried to do this to that I've actually gotten this to work on. any ideas about this? (I'm using GIMP 2.4 if that helps)

I take it you know that the tga and tgb are exactly the same picture...just that the tgb is usually 4mb whilst the tga is 1 mb

so the tgb is the one you add fine detail to..then reduce it to make the tga


.....it's probably because you were shooting at friendlies.....lol

yeah, when I test damage textures and such its much easier to just shoot down a friendly a/c- they don't try to evade!

well yeah, I knew that, actually the tgb is 1024x1024 while the tga is only 512x512. also, I believe the game auto-generates the 3 .tgas and modifies them to the same standards as the tgb, so all I've been working on is the tgb. My main question though is how to fix the damage textures.

I did try changing the damage .tga to indexed mode, and that gave me a similar result to what shows up in game, so is it possible that the game somehow only reads it as an indexed .tga, even though its in RGB mode?

Did you made alpha chanel in that tgb?

no, I didn't. I downloaded the new default skins from here, and the only way I can change the transparent areas is if I do it on the tgb from that pack. I can't figure out how to edit the alpha in gimp, so I just do it that way.
I'd really like an answer to the first question too though...

hello, I would like to edit added damage on the aircraft as the Hurricane to top but I do not know how to edit in Il-2, I looked at the site, but I found nothing, could you give me a walking track please. sorry for English I know very little, and I do not know if the translator has translated exactly what I wrote.
