[WIP] Improved Hawaii Map
#1

Ok guys, I've started work on overhauling the stock Hawaii map. I was considering starting from scratch (as I know others here have attempted), but have decided against it as I still don't quite know all of the map tools. I am, however, getting very good with the Mod FMB, so I'll stick to that and use the stock Hawaii map as my base to work from.

I'm at work right now, so no screenshots yet, but I'm almost done Hickam Field and the navy yard. I'm working from pictures as much as I can, but a lot of this is just whatever I think looks good or fits with the terrain tiles.

I did place a copy of my Il-2 install on my laptop, so I'll boot that up in a little while to get some screens to show off.

More info to come!

That is a very nice news indeed. I'm looking forward to see the work as I'm a big fan of early war at the Pacific... Btw, I'm currently making a skinpack that'll include P-36 that scrambled during Pearl-Harbour attack...

P.S.: Mark, is that you? :?:

Best wishes,
Mangas.

I have screenshots!

Hickam Field

All runways work in both directions except for the smaller runway in the center, which only runs in the direction away from the control tower. I am currently working out a slight bug in allowing landings to be conducted from the N/S and E/W runways (the two shorter sides of the triangle) simultaneously. I'll have come screenshots of this field in action once I'm ready to test Luke Field on Ford Island.

Navy Yard

The Navy Yard isn't quite accurate, partly due to the in game map's shoreline. I didn't want pieces of the shore line to be visible inside the docks. I did try to get it close though.

Luke Field, Ford Island

Here's the beginnings of Ford Island. This is the central portion of Luke Field's runway and it will be expanded outwards to incorporate the rest of the tarmac. I used the taxi pieces to outline the actual runway, which as I've found through several pictures was the case on the actual runway. The Floatplane ramp is visible at the Southern end of the runway.

And sorry Mangas, that's not me Wink

Looking good ...... now we have more tools to make a better job of it.

My mission I worked upon over several years and incorporated many structures into the map (my version of Hawaii) ...... but yours is looking more accurate

(The link is inoperative)

my version of hawaii is here if you want to compare it ..and you can always copy/paste from it into yours if you want using the fullmaptools FMB

Looks great and long overdue. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
How about the distinctive control tower on Ford Island, any help there? Diamond Head?

Here's some more screenshots of my newest additions to Ford Island.

First, the control tower:

What do you think? It's the best I can do with the limited objects, and it's not too bad really IMO.

The Runway:

I have 3 sets of runway waypoints set up, so you can have 3 aircraft taking off simultaneously.

More screens of takeoff and landing.

And finally, ship moorings:

These are spaced too close together right now, but I will fix them tomorrow. I need to get to bed Wink

Great work! Looking at these images, I can understand why the original map maker was unable to acheive a similar result with his default map. Wait. No, I can't.

That's looking very good.
I'm sure a properly modelled Pearl Harbour will prove to be very popular.

Are you intending to adjust any of the shorelines or are you just working with objects.

For shoreline adjustment you will need the Map_C Tools

I have all of the map tools, but for now at least, I'm only using the stock map. I've modified the actual terrain textures being used by replacing them in the load.ini file, but that's the only major change to the actual map.

Thats ok.

If you have the map_C Tools try copying the tools and two map files into a sub-folder to work on.

You need map_c.tga and map_c.tga_table in your sub-folder

Run compose.bat

This creates a greyscale image of your coastline and rivers.

If you have a basic knowledge and access to photoshop, gimp, or similar image editors you will see that it is easy to make small adjustments to the coast with a paintbrush tool.

Use transform.bat followed by disect.bat to make your new map_c.tga and map_c.tga_table

I would rename these files something like map_c001.tga and map_c001.tga_table

and change the entry load.ini to ColorMap = map_c001.tga

This helps you to keep track of your changes.

You can do this to the actors.static as well. Rename it actors_001.static and change the reference in load.ini to match

Keeping track of your changes becomes important especially if you make a mistake and want to backtrack.

Thanks ash Wink

I do know how to use all of the tools, but for now I'm just going to stick with the stock map.

Thanks for the advice though Smile

Oh, and I want to address one thing I've notice in my screenshots. You may see a bunch of the random trees inside the airfield and navy yard facilities. That is because these screens were for the most part taken from within the Mod FMB. They are not present in the playable map.

More updates.

You may notice the different textures in use now. They are from the Hawaii load.ini in the updated stock maps pack.

Fixed the mooring positions:

Floatplane Ramp, still needs some more work, obviously:

Overview of Ford Island. I've added the additional parking space in the front left corner as well as a road and moved some buildings. Since I'm limited in the airfield tiles I can use (my steel plate tiles aren't the stock black color), I don't have a great representative of the tarmac. I'm trying to counter this by outlining the tarmac area with taxi plates.

Haleiwa Field. I've moved the field slightly as well as starting over from scratch. Haleiwa was used early on as an emergency strip and a base for units carrying out gunnery practice. The intention was to demonstrate conditions on a combat airfield. The runway is shortened pretty significantly, but 8 fighters can easily line up and takeoff with plenty of room to spare (8 is all I've tested so far, more is definitely possible).
