Moving troops?
#16

Possibly ( don't remember well what I did back then, those were confusing times, came with the first visibility mod for smoke and, fire, then the idea of modifying the maps... and so many things to try, and so much walking in the dark)

You know the little troops that abandon convoy vehicles? It would be neat to have them abandon buildings and/or invisible objects. That way you could mix static troops and troops that are running trying to find cover...

Just to be clear,we are talking here about moving troops, they only lack proper animation because they use vehicles movement engine for moving. And your idea is possible, in fact I already have something like that.

In addition I have open 10 new slots for vehicles,People0-People9 so moders can make 10 new "vehicles" and call them People0-People9 and give them properties and look they want.

Good thing with vehicles is that they can be arranged in columns and that way we can combine smaller groups of people into big units without creating new objects.

Yes, it was made by renowned game-hacker Kegetys. He is Finnish but speaks very good English. He has a forum here for game-hack requests: http://www.kegetys.net/forum/index.php?board=1.0

He somehow linked the animated pilot figure to the arrow keys - the in-game compass showed which way the figure was headed.

Somebody asked him recently about his much-publicised IL2 hacks and he replied that they were made for pre-4.05 IL2 and that he wasn't sure they would work with later versions. Seems his interests have moved on elsewhere. However, he would be a great asset to get back into the fold - if he's open to the idea. Why not drop him a line?

I'm in favor of this line of development, it would be nice to build a jungle based mission with minimal vehicles and predominantly ground troops.

If these ground units were developed could they be given offensive capabilities or is that part of the code inaccessible. Would doing this require the use of the same part of the code that determines DM/ gun effectiveness for aircraft?

I'm probably showing my ignorance by asking this. I only ask because a saw that the AAA policy is to disallow mods that effect DM's. I hope that doesn't apply to this project because it would be a huge breakthrough.

Good Luck!

When new objects are created it's inevitable to give them damage model and armament in case of ships/vehicles/troops. In this situation AAA position is not completely clear but if destruction mod is allowed here than I don't see any real reason not to allow assigning damage/armament to newly created objects.

Seems like to make FR not so much of an issue maybe each troop group could have a single .30 cal MG or so. I'd tend to make them possible to damage with .30 cal fire, but very difficult to actually destroy (least the spread out version).

It might be cool to have prone (are there any?) troops, that move at a VERY slow pace. Course the AI might allow ground units to stop and fight a while, right?

FC,

I know you have other projects going right now, but I was curious to know if you still think a moving troops mod is feasible. I'm guessing that you found that it was not workable. I know LAL_RONE is working on some nice static units. But it would be nice to have some active units that could be incorporated into missions.

Just Hoping.

But then I also want to hunt and shoot them on the ground

Then we need also "flying" animation when their are hit by rockets or bombs, and also burning animation with napalm

I for one woud love to see columns of troops running for cover as I strafe them on the road. Might be a bit heavy on the frame rate though.

There is a mod included in the ultr@pack 1.7 (should be generally available soon) of different kinds moving and firing troops. I have not tried using them yet but the mod does exist. -viking

This place is full of imagination, inventiveness, I like this idea, what will happen when you bomb it though? Will "tank destroyed by Player" show on screen
and there will be a fire and smoke coming from the dead soldiers i.e. invisible tank? Also soldiers would be jumping out of them when they get strafed.

It would be funny to see them bumping into each other trying to work out a route, like trucks and tanks do when they get too close to each other.

I'm wondering if the pushbike would be a good model to be converted for this purpose.
