Beginners Mods Install Guides to 4.09b1m Parts 1 and 2
#1

EDIT: May. 2, 2009:
I would advise anyone reading this to go here: (The link is inoperative) and download this: Unified Installer Version 1.1

Also, please post any problems with the Unified Installer in that forum.
[END EDIT]

SEPT. 5, 2008
The release of the Unified Installer has made this Install Guide redundant but I will leave it as is for now in case anyone is still using it.

There is a beginners tutorial here: (The link is inoperative)
This is not a replacement for that one, it is an alternative.

I am posting this here in hope it will help people who are just getting into modding IL2 1946 to a working 4.09b1m version with none of the problems that have cropped up all over these forums.

There are fixes to all the problems that have cropped up but finding them is difficult on such a big site.

If you follow this guide with care and, most important, patience, you should not have to look for them.

Before we begin I need to thank PapaG39 who saved much of the work below when I had deleted my first attempt to revise the install guide last week and advised me that it worked with a clean install of 1946 patched to 4.08m.
So, if you have an unmodded 4.08m, you can skip steps 1 and 2.

EDIT JULY 28 2008 FOR DIRECT DOWNLOAD VERSIONS:
Go here (The link is inoperative) and get this: Download Fix For Ubi.com Users .
quote="Hellzone"]Grab your download Arrow (The link is inoperative)Download Arrow Fix For Ubi.com Users[/url]

Simple Instructions. Have your game installed, copy all the files from the rar into your game. Download the soundmod and have fun.

Enjoy :wink:

Any Problems
Please Report !![/quote]

You should start with Step 3A and proceed carefully.
(END OF EDIT.)

If you need to start from the very beginning :
1: Install 1946

2: Install patch 4.08m
http://mission4today.com/index.php?name ... s&get=1908

The next steps, 3A and B will add some new AI made flyable planes to your game and make your game ready for adding all the other mods here.
The links for all of step 3 are in the link in 3A. You must read and follow the instructions in this step carefully.

3A: Install ENG SOUND MOD / SFX (& Mod activator)
(The link is inoperative)
You will have to choose a soundmod option, I use 093 but this process should work with the others .

This (3B) is probably the MOST IMPORTANT step in the entire process.
It will enable install of the mods and new planes.
3B: Go here: (The link is inoperative) Install the WRAPPER.exe and the AC_INSTALLER_v2.2.exe
[EDIT 8/27/08]
( AC Installer version will change when a NEW SLOT plane is added and is now at 2.4 with the Mosquito Mk B XVI.) [END EDIT.]

The next steps (4A AND B) will fix the problem of Campaigns showing up in Russian language:
4A: Go here (The link is inoperative) and get this: DOWNLOAD > English_Career_Language_Fix.rar

4B:Open the file and drag the DGen folder into your main 1946 install folder and let it overwrite when asked.
This will fix the campaign issue but the load screen is still in Russian, for now let's leave it that way, I will point to the fix later.

Please DO NOT SKIP the next step, it will make sure all is going well.

5: Run game. The load screen is Russian and shows ver 4.08m. Click Pilot career to make sure it is in English. If not, go back and read instructions very carefully.

OK, Now we make this 4.09b1m because there are some mods that only work with 4.09b1m

6A: Go here: (The link is inoperative)
6B: Go to step 3 on that page and Download > 409_MOD_b1m.exe
6C: Install it.
6D: Run game, load screen is still Russian but version is 4.09b1m.

Now our 1946 install is ready for anything yet available here, all the cool planes and maps these guys have worked so hard to bring to us.

I will not address mod switchers and some beta addons, my goal is to make a basic modded install that works and the fewer variables I add the better.

SOME MORE AI PLANES MADE FLYABLE:

7A: Go here (The link is inoperative) and scroll down to this: Download > AAA_MOD_PACK_v2_6.exe and install it
7B: Run the game and open Quick Mission Builder and scroll the plane list, you should find all the new planes in the post.

SOME RETEXTURED MAPS: (Disclaimer, these may replace some of your default maps with user retextured maps.)

7C: Go here: (The link is inoperative) and download and install AAA - community map pack.
7D: To make sure this worked, run game, open Full Mission Builder, click File, Load Map and the map list will appear. It should contain a lot of maps (115)

Now we add some of the NEW planes to the game, these are completely new, not AI made flyable and have their own slot in the game

8A: Go here: (The link is inoperative) for Spit Mk1
8B: Follow directions when the black screen pops up and all will be well.
8C: Run game, open Quick Mission Builder and scroll down plane list to find Spitfire MK1 in the list.
8D: Go here for BEAUFIGHTER MK.X. (The link is inoperative)
8E: Go here for BF-110-G4 WILDE SAU. (The link is inoperative)
8F: GO here for Me 410 A,B & D Hornisse. (The link is inoperative)
8G Repeat 8C to make sure the planes are in the list.

Now you should have a working modded install with no conflicts and some of the new planes available to fly from the Quick Mission Builder.

There are many more excellent mods and maps to add and I will continue, in Part 2, with the QMBPlus and getting some of the new maps and missions into it.
(End of Part 1)

Good Luck.

EDITED ON JULY 27 TO INCLUDE PART 2

Here is "Beginners Mods Install Guide to 4.09b1m Part 2 QMBPlus, Maps "
I have decided to put Part 2 here, it makes for a long read but

First let's get some of the new maps into the game.
This should be painless as long as you have completed all of Part 1.

We will only add 3 of the new maps right now
It should work with any map or map pack with self installers and you can add others as you wish.

You will be asked to open the Full Mission Biulder, it is ONLY for checking to see if things are installing properly.
Do not look for missions in the Quick Mission Builder to fly on the new maps, they are not there yet.

Welcome to The Slot.
1. Go here: viewtopic.php?t=4854 and get this: (The link is inoperative)
2. Run it.
3. Start the game, open the Full Mission Builder and click on File then Load Map.
If all went well you should see entries for 6 slot maps at the end of the map list.
4. Click on one of them and see if it loads. Be patient, it takes about 10 to 15 seconds for the map to show up for me.

vol_ItalyAfricaGreece.
1. Go here: viewtopic.php?t=5404 and get this: (The link is inoperative)
2. Run it.
3. Start the game, open the Full Mission Builder and click on File then Load Map.
If all went well you should see an entry for vol_ItalyAfricaGreece at the end of the map list.
4. Click on it and see if it loads. Be patient, it takes about 10 to 15 seconds for the map to show up for me.

Malta Map - v1.3 - UPDATED.
1. Go here: viewtopic.php?t=3036 and get this: (The link is inoperative)
2. Run it.
3. Start the game, open the Full Mission Builder and click on File then Load Map.
If all went well you should see 3 entries for mrz_Malta at the end of the map list.
4. Click on one and see if it loads. Be patient, it takes about 10 to 15 seconds for the map to show up for me.

OK, if all is well, continue on to the QMBPlus section.

This step is for people who wish to upgrade the Quick Mission Builder and add some NEW maps and missions to it.

If you have not completed Part 1 Basics, I make no gurantees that this will work properly.

Be advised, QMBPlus has no auto installer and will require a bit more care to install properly. Proceed with caution, follow each step and all will be well.

1A: Go here and Download > QMBPlus_v1_1.rar : (The link is inoperative)

1B: These instructions are copied from the link above.
INSTALLING
1. Unpack QMBPlus_v1_1 to your Hard-Drive.
2. Navigate to QMBPlus_v1_1 on your Hard-Drive.
3. Copy the folder QMBPlus to your MODS folder.
4. Add content from gui_ru.txt to your gui_ru.properties file which is in your files/i18n folder.
5. Check to see wether your MODS folder has folders STD/i18n & look for an additional gui_ru.properties file, add content from gui_ru.txt to your additional gui_ru.properties file. Do not be concerned if this file is not present here.
6. If you are new user add the following in the end of your conf.ini file:

[quick]
Custom0=NWEurope
Custom1=MTO
Custom2=Bessarabia
(End of linked instructions.)

Please DO NOT skip the next step, it will make sure all is going well.

1C: Start the game, open Quick Mission Builder. You should see QMBPlus at top of page.
Click on Map and scroll down the list, there should be a Bessarabia, MTO and Northwest Europe map listed.

From here the instructions are mine, we need to do one more thing.

7A: Return to QMBPlus 1.1 in your MODS folder.

(Added on July 23, 2008
If your download of the QMBPlus does not contain a files folder, skip to 7C.
The Wrapper will handle the 11 files.)

7B: Open the files folder. Inside are 11 files with long strings of letters and numbers and a Missions folder.
Copy the 11 files into your Files folder in the main game directory.

7C: Go back and open the Missions folder. Inside is a "Quick" folder that activates missions for the new maps.
Copy or Drag this Quick folder into your Missions folder in the main game directory.
Now your main Missions folder should contain these 4 folders, Campaign, Net, Quick and Single

With this in place, when you set up missions in the QMBPlus they will work on whatever Map you have selected.

OK, now we will get those maps into the QMBPlus.

We have to add lines to the conf file in the main game directory.
These can be added one at a time but for ease of installation we will try this:

1A: Highlight all of this below and copy it at the bottom of your conf file in the main game directory

[quick]
Custom0=NWEurope
Custom1=MTO
Custom2=Bessarabia
Custom3=Balaton
Custom4=Singapore
Custom5=LAL_Okinawa OkinawaLAL
Custom6=Lvov
Custom7=LAL_Normandie-44
Custom8=The_Slot_1-44
Custom9=vol_ItalyAfricaGreece
Custom10=Ardennes
Custom11=Berlin
Custom12=Lybia_N-E
Custom13=Prokhorovka
Custom14=Kuban
Custom15=NewGuinea
Custom16=NetMountains
Custom17=Norway
Custom18=OnlineDesert
Custom19=Channel
Custom20=SandsofTime
Custom21=Slot
Custom22=Guadalcanal
Custom23=Midway
Custom24=Burma
Custom25=Crimea
Custom26=Hawaii
Custom27=Murmansk_Winter
Custom28= mrz_Malta
Custom29=BoB
Custom30=Singapore

I know there are many maps, some of which hold no interest for you but those that do interest you should now work in the QMBPlus with all mission options, None, Strike, Scramble, Airbase, Armor and Bridge available.

If you click on one of the mission options above and get a Wrong Target window it means there are no missions in the Quick folder for that particular map option, you can find mission packs here:
viewtopic.php?t=5664 and here:
viewtopic.php?t=5944

Just follow the readme and put the contents of the Quick folder in the download into the Quick folder in the Missions folder in the main game directory.

If all went well you should be able to select a map and a mission type, add your flights to it and fly it.

There is much left out of this install process but this should get you up and running with a well modded install to which you can add other mods.

If there is any doubt in your mind as to whether or not a mod is going to work, do not add it until you ask for more information about it.

Good Luck.

Hi Forager, these instructions are very clear to me. An easy to follow guide. As I told in one of the previous threads there was some confusion about the order of installs but this guide is very comprehensive.
Step 1 to 6 without any problem! Now I have a Modded V4.09b1m and the soundmod. Added some new maps in FMB and another time I will do some more installs.

THANX MAN!

Forager, this should definitely be a sticky. I've been through at least ten installs of IL2 on five different machines in the last few months, and even though I think that I understand the in and outs of adding mods, to have your checklist has been a great help. Many thanks for spending the time and effort to do it, it's much appreciated.

Thank you guys for the feedback, glad it worked out.

You guys may not need this but for anyone who might, here is the Russian Load Screen FIX:
(The link is inoperative)

The 'filelist.txt' is in the main game folder.

There is also a great collection of pics for your load screens compiled by Berserker here: viewtopic.php?t=6540

It is about an 80 MB download but there are pics for many Countries and they can be used for the Main Load Screens or Campaign load screens .

This guide is easy to follow and a great help - Many thanks! Big Grin

One quick question: is it ok to add the patch and mods to a game install containing other add-ons, such as MAT Manager & IL2 Stab? Or is adding to a clean install of IL2 '46 (patched to 4 08m) better?

Hawkman, you're welcome.

I have never used MAT MANAGER so no idea on that one.
The topics below seem to indicate some problems with Mat Mgr but they seen to be able to get it working.:

viewtopic.php?t=3856&highlight=mat+manager

viewtopic.php?t=3055&highlight=mat+manager

viewtopic.php?t=2393&highlight=mat+manager

(The link is inoperative)

I use Stab and before I decided to make a clean install it worked with the mods I had added.

When I dumped my old modded install to start from scratch, I just reinstalled Stab and pointed it to the new install.
