Spitfire MK IX Tail Fins?
#1

Call me wrong, but when I have looked at other games and actual pics of the IXc's and e's, the tail fins were rounded like the MK I's throught the V's and not pointed like the MK 6-8's. If what I see is wrong, is there a way to fix that? I love the spitfires and would choose one over any other fighter of the days including the mustang.

I have noticed a post later on in my serching (Dial-up) and found a link to only a IXc, but the link at the download site has been removed or missing.

I also like the Bubble top spits i found. will this have any effect if loading both?

If I had the talents you all do on modding, then we be in pretty good shape being im always at the house now with alot of free time.

if you do a search of the forum, Ranwers did a fix for this some time ago. However, these tails are not historically inaccurate in real history or in the context the planes are meant to be included in the unmodded game and is understandable given it was made by a business.

1.) real history - late production spitfire 9s had the broad chord tails (the ones that were coming off the production lines with the Mk XVIs, which were just spitfire 9s with american made merlin engines, and also remember that some early production 8s had the rounded tails too so it kinda goes both ways). many of the spitfire 9s sent by lend-lease to the soviet union in the latter stages of ww2 had these tails instead of the more common rounded tails.

2.) game context history - almost all of the planes in the game are only in it because they could be found in one way or another on the eastern front. the only exceptions are the planes from the pacific fighters release (hellcats, zeros, etc). i have the documentation on this (Aircraft of the Aces no. 74, Soviet Lend-Lease fighter Aces of WW2) which really answered almost all my questions about "why is this plane in the game?" or "why would they put this version of this plane in the game when there were lots more of that kind?" So since most of the mk 9s sent to the soviet union had the broad chord tails, broad cord tailed mk 9s is what we got for the game.

3. economically - because of the first two points, this sort of let oleg and his team cut some corners. yes, he could have made another 9 with the rounded tail, but there wasn't realyl a point because if anyone made a fuss about it he could go hey, they had them in real life. This let them make just one tail for most of the spitfire variants in game and saved them time and money to get the game out faster to make more money. Another example is the P-40M/N debate i remember seeing here, where people were wondering why they put the P-40M in the game when there were lots more Ns that were sent via lend-lease. yeah the Soviet Union got almost 5 times as many Ns as Ms, but they did receive Ms and it was cheaper to make the M for the game because it would require less work to make since it was so similar to the E, two planes for almost the price of one.

hope this was helpful, cheers!

Thank you for getting back quickly sir. I quess I really didn't relize that thats the way things were. Oh well, I still have fun anyway no matter what they look like. Now if I can only figure out how to make a 3 blade fit in place of a 4 blade and how to make the stock roundels better. Guess it's past time to start fartin around and seeing what I can do. Wish I had the skills that some of these other gentlemen do. IL2 series would be awsome and it would give me something better to do than just shooting doen the same ol rookie planes.

Thanks again for the reply.

There were some threads about round tail fins and even smaller carburator intakes like on older Spitfires (IXb from 42-43). I think these topics were deleted, because the AAA team decided to create a new slot aircraft, a real Spitfire IXb, with correct FM and so on...
I can't wait to hear some updates about it!

ahh well that's exciting news to me. knew there was a mod out for it with the tail and that the small carb intake one was made and had disappeared, but i didn't know that was the reason why, very exciting news indeed then!

Ranwers "round tail" mod for the Mk9c wasn't removed, it's still
available. The link for DL is on page 4 of the Hawker Typhoon
thread:
viewtopic.php?t=1277&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45

This mod was originaly set up for the old File List system, all you need
now is the SpitfireMkIXc_(GB) folder from the zip file, put it in your
IL2 Sturmovik 46\FILES\3do\plane folder, select RAF and you will have
the "round tail" MkIXc.

Note:
You will have the early "small carb intake" version. If you want the later
"large intake" version, remove the following files from the SpitfireMkIXc_(GB)
folder:

CF_D0.msh
CF_D1.msh
CF_D2.msh
CF_D3.msh

Big Thanks to Ranwers for this 8) mod.
