[WIP] Campaign for Fabianfred's Thailand map.
#1

I've been working on a campaign for a few weeks now that is using Fabianfreds lovely map of Thailand and thought I may as well start a thread showing my slow progress thus far.

You will fly for the Royal Thai Air Force in a number of diverse aircraft types, starting with the Hawk 75A-4 and eventually flying the KI-43.

Background screen.

The campain will reside in the NN folder and will probably use American rank structure, need to research this so any comments welcome.

I've managed to create the thai image for the carreer screen using an image by Eugene Ipavac that came from a site dealing with Thai aircraft markings.

Up to now it is only five missions long, these will deal with the run up to the declaration of war by Thailand with French Indochina, and up to now consist of a number of patrols, the second mission seeing a clash with RAF Buffaloes along the Burma border, a sort of diplomatic incident, just to add a little action.

At the moment I am trying to find the skins to use for both sides and have collected some great work from a number of skinners, some of whom I'm trying to contact for permission to use their work. I have also been working on one of my own skins which will represent the Vought Corsair used by Thailand for which I had to make a template for from the U-2VS void, the skinners Jack of all trades.

And I have added images to VP medias supperb skinmod for both the Thai and French static aircraft.

Thailand static. Skins by Hynkel for KI-21, KI-27 and Hawk. Myself U-2VS for Corsair.

Vichy French static. Skins by Hyate for TB-3 as Farman 221 and Bf 110 as Potez 631. MS406 by Imme.

At the moment all the Thai aircraft carry the Elephant insignia, I may leave that as is even though there were three different marking variations during the periods I will cover.

I'll leave it at that for now, any comments, historical information or links to relevant skins would be appreciated.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete.

This is a GREAT idea! Unusual aircraft used over a seldom explored piece of ground. Very original. This can be very, very good. I will get this one, for sure!

           I wonder if there would be an opportunity to shoot down US P-38, P-51 and B-29? Or the Japanese?

Some useful information can be found here:

Poltava the skin mod is already part of the MODS folder, go skinmod, 3do, planes and the folder that has the image files is there. To create your own skins for static aircraft you need to start your game and go to QMB. Once there select the aircraft you want and apply the skin you wish to appear on the static aircraft. Exit this and go to your IL-2 directory and go into the PaintShemes folder, there you should find a folder called cache, this will only appear if you have ClearCache=0 set in your conf.ini file, found where the missions folders etc. are.

If you have altered your conf.ini correctly this is what you should find, the cache folder looks faded compared to the rest.

Double click this and wait for an age, many folders will appear with numbers, scroll down past these and this is what should appear, in this case I selected the MBR.

Once you click on this folder you will find these four files.

You now need to create a summer folder within the aircraft folder, already done here, and drag the four images into it. Once done the MBR folder in this instance had needed to be re-named as in the planes folder and then copied and pasted over it, job done. There can be a little trial and error here because in the mods folder some folders have to be called Multi1, and some are even wrote slightly different to what is in the PaintSchemes folder, have a look in the planes folder, you will get the idea.

Cracken as far as a scrap with the Yanks goes there is a way to go yet. The war was in three fairly distinct stages. The first was the lead up to and conflict with the French which was followed by a very brief scrap with the japanese as Thailand was occupied.

The second stage was where the Thai's entered the Shan states, on the Burma China border I think, still researching this.

The third stage was the defence of Thailand fron intruding American and British forces quite late in the war.

There is very little information available on the combat exploits of Thailands Air force, so this campaign will be based on what little information is available, primarily at the sites you give links for,
and will probably involve quite a lot of artistic liscence to make it interesting!

Here is the static image for the MBR, the skin is by TCHAIKA.

at my download site http://www.4shared.com/dir/4397598/27d3 ... aring.html
there is my version of the 'morenations' mod to which I have added the Royal Thai Airforce early war orbat of Squadrons ... and you can start a new TH folder in your Single or Coop or Campaign folders....so that the Thailand country shows

no default skins or markings ...you make your own skins for that

Thanks for that fabianfred I've dowloaded the morenations mod, but I need a little help.

I have created a Thailand folder and into it I have transfered the American career structure and the image I had already created of the Thai insignia.

I copied and pasted the folders shown here to to the folders already in the root il-2 folder, but I am not sure where the three ORIG country files go, do they get pasted into an existing folder or do you create a seperate folder for them. Also, should the files you have provided actually create the necessary ranks and awards for Thailand or must you do this yourself.

I put the "morenations" mod into its own folder in the MODS folder

the ORIG files are just the unaltered original files...you can delete them ..(you have backups in the rar file you downloaded if you should need them)

I only have a TH folder in my coops and single....since I didn't do any campaign yet

but you will have to make your own stuff....or just copy the Jap folder and rename it

Thanks again fabianfred, I've been messing around with this through the day and have kept the three files in a morenations folder but have put them at different times in the MODS folder and the Il-2 folder, each time with no change when I launched the game, now I know why. I wasn't sure if these files were supposed to activate something, ie. medals, rank etc. Now I've set up the morenations folder I had to change the Blue and Red forces, strangely I had the French as Red and Thai as Blue, this can get very confusing can't it! So originally the Thai forces have been set as japanese, to the western ear I suppose the Thai and Japanese language wouldn't sound much different, not that I have any personal experience, and I do apologize to both peoples here, forgive my generalization, but if you had to use a language to dipict Thai in the sim it would have to be one from the region, Japanese, right. Anyway I now have a problem because the slight diplomatic incident I planned for mission two means I need to set the RAF as Blue. Now need skins for these aircraft because I can't set them with markings on because they are japanese! This is all getting a little mad. Because the Thai forces are now set to red the language you get in game is Russian, AAAAAGGGGHHH. Got round this by setting a Thai folder in speech and using American actors, copied and pasted into the folder, will change to Japanese I think for the reason explained. This is becoming all very confusing isn't it. I can at least now complete the campaign as far as the japanese occupation because there will be no problem with who you shoot at, after this it will become a little difficult again, Red on Red or is it Blue, or Blue on Blue or Red, confused you will be, I am, or will be when I add Chinese and American forces to the mix. So do I use japanese rank and medals, or American, is there any information available of the Thai rank and medal structure for this period in history. Will I ever finish this campaign I wonder?

Wishing you the very best, Pete.

By the way has anyone done a set of Thai actors files for this sim?

The campaign now resides in its own Thai folder thanks to fabianfred's morenations mod.
I had to transfer everthing to the Red side, this was originally set to the Blue for the NN folder. I have had a go at making an intro movie, nothing fancy but it works!

Start

and end
[Image: Introvideoend.jpg]

I have also been busy making some skins.

The I-153 will be standing in for the Hawk III.

My skin showing the undercarriage and the engine.

Here is the real thing, similar me thinks.

The skin using a made up pattern until I can find a decent image of the wing pattern of the real scheme.

I have also just started a skin for the B5N2 which will be playing the part of the Thai KI-30 bombers, the real aircraft has a spatted undercarriage and I thought of using the D3A1 but thought the B5N2 looked more like the KI-30.

Thats all for now if anyone has any comments please post, all the best, Pete.

Yes, you are right: the B5N is a better Ki-30 stand-in than the D3A1 (which I've just myself, in that role).

Looks very promising!

Peter, it is always difficult to pick a type to portray an aircraft not available in the sim for use in any campaign, glad to know you agree with my choice on this one. Will continue to post pics as the skin progresses. Just finished your Hawk campaign by the way, nice one.

Regards, pete.

So here is my question:

Will this campaign just be for the French-Thai War? Or will this go through the whole war? If so, what will we do after the French-Thai War? That is, if you are doing the French-Thai War (I assumed that you were, after I saw that briefing in the nice screenshot Smile ).

I imagine the Thai Air Force flew in China, but what about Burma? Or the Philippines? I should go and find out what the Thai Air Force did in the war.....

DaBomb746, the original intention was to take the campaign through to 1945, but I have since decided just to consentrate on the Franco/Thai war. Information on the operations of Thailands Air Force is hard to come by and even what there is is contradictory. The Thai army launched a campaign into the Shan states where the Air Force supported them, but I have no information regarding any combat with Chinese aircraft during that campaign. As far I know there were no clashes with RAF aircraft either, although my campaign has one, a sort of diplomatic incident you could say, along the Burma border.

All the best, Pete.
