I think he meant that UK would be an obstacle, unless it could fly really high.

Maybe, if they took off in the south of France or Norway and derouted Britsh islands a few hundred kilometres south or north. However I'm sure British would launch a lot of long range (twin engined) interceptors at predicted bomber return time and cover the area north and south of British islands.

Great Britain was in effect like an enemy AAA gun at the end of your runway.
