Is there one, or is it that they have to be linked up, i.e. can't be placed in isolation?
I tried adding isolated chunks of roads near rivers in order to get some extra bridges on the map, but they don't show. I haven't had chance to experiment with this yet - has anyone else?

I'm pretty sure a road needs to be at least 2 pixels. I';v tried one and you just get the swiggle line thing.
