IL2 + Vista = Not Working
#1

Okay, so I installed Vista put my favorite game IL2 1946, patched it to 4.08m or so I think. The installation went easy, but now the game won't start?! I have no idea why, I have perfect settings and computer compatability. I tried the run compatability "windows XP service pack 2" and that doesnt help, I have admin power. Anyone else know why this wouldnt work? Also Hyper Lobby's border skin is all grey, I can't see the color ping nor the X to quit out. YIKES! what's going on?

Please help!!

Check your config.ini and make sure that the screen resolution your trying to run the game in is within the limits of your video card and that it's got everything in it.
Also make sure that Vista has been patched to SP1.

If your config.ini file is or looks messed up. Even if you're just not positive, delete your config.ini file and re-run the IL2setup.exe file. This will re-build the config.ini file back to baseline.

I had the same problem.
I unstalled the game, and installed it in a different folder than c:\program files (c:\games for example).

this did the trick for me Smile turning off user account can help also

Do NOT install in the "Program Files" folder whatever you do- best is to create a folder called "Games" or "Sims" (or whatever you want to call your folder) and install in that; you will get a path such as C:\Games\Ubisoft\Il-2 Sturmovik 1946. This goes for ALL games/sims, which will then run without problems.

I had it working fine in Vista, but installed in c:\Games folder.
All mods installed with no problems.

Mind you. I've now reverted my whole system back to Win XP because I had so many minor problems getting other old software, and even printers, to work properly. -- and now everything works better because I don't have Vista draining system resources.

Hi I bought a new Sony Vaio laptop here in Thailand for work.
Tryed to put the game in and it wouldn't even accept the dvd
How's that for Vista.
I seriously think Vista is a very regulated and strict Windows.
XP is very good an much more flexible.

In a few years time, we may well be able to forget about Windows altogether Big Grin . A new open-source OS is being developed, ReactOS, which will be 100% compatible with W2000, XP and 2003. At the moment it is still alpha and buggy as hell so NOT suitable for everyday use, but it definitely deserves watching closely.
Just think...... an OS without compulsory activation, the ability to run all Windows applications/drivers etc, which works like W2000 and best of all is a free download!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Windows 7 is due out in 2010 and I thought when I first tried Vista that it was an incomplete operating system just as Windows Millennium was a hybrid stopgap between Windows 98 and XP. Vista is not a replacement for XP, it's not an upgrade either, there is nothing it does better or more efficiently, in fact the opposite is true in many cases. Why change from a system that works to one that doesn't and requires almost twice the resources in order to fail? Releasing it showed a great deal of arrogance on Microsoft's part who, totally out of touch with their customer's requirements, believed it would sell just because it was the latest version of Windows.

Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president for the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, said recently that Microsoft realized it shouldn't forge ahead on Windows 7 and deliver an operating system unsupported by partners' hardware or software.

So will Windows 7 be the new XP?

I doubt it

Well, if you're trying to use a '/' instead of a '\' that would be your problem. If not, then uninstall the game, run CCleaner to clean up the registry entries left behind, reboot the system, then install the game again and use the path you want.

Mine is D:\Games\IL2_1946

Using Vista x64 Ultimate

I hope somebody can help with this one - I had a nice setup of 1946 plus mod (no betas) installed on my PC running Vista Home Premium (SP1) 64 bit. This I copied from my old XP machine rather than installing from the DVD. It worked fine. On downloading the Spitfire XIV I could not get it to run so decided to uninstall and reinstall from the DVD. I have installed it into its own folder on C (C:/Il2newinstall), have expanded the permissions so all users should be able to access it and installed it in XP SP2 compatibility mode. It appears to install correctly but the icon on the desktop shows the generic windows dots thing (no idea what it is really called) rather than the IL2 symbol. When I click on the shortcut or the exe file in C:/Il2newinstall I get a revolving disc icon for a while and nothing happens. The shortcut path seems to be correct so it is pointing to the right place. I have done an extensive trawl here and on the Ubi site and although I find huge problems with running the game on Vista nobody seems to have experienced this particular one. My general opinion of Vista is certainly not printable here but I would be most grateful for any help. I have not reinstalled my original XP version which I will try as a last resort if nobody can help. Of course Vista may now be so stuffed up by my many unsuccessful installs that it might not work either.

All the best

After a week or so of hoping somebody would reply to this post nobody seems to have come up with anything. In the meantime I have come to suspect that the spinning disc/failure to launch problem is to do with the Securom copyright protection software on the disc. I downloaded the A-Ray scanner and it detected Securom on the DVD. The solution according to posts on the Pacific Fighters site seems to be to acquire the il2.exe file from the US version of the disc. I live in Britain so I have the European version which can helpfully be identified by having "Made in Europe" above the barcode. Some copies apparently made it to the US so if some kind person across the Pond could check and email me the exe file from the US release I would be very grateful. The US version apparently launches fine and does not involve Securom.

Exactly why this happens in my case and people using apparently the same version of Vista can have no problems at all I have no idea. If it is the solution it is also very annoying that a legitimately purchased piece of software will not run on the owner's computer. I have also been prevented from flying for about a month now, I am getting withdrawal symptoms and I really want to try the Korea map.

Mine is in Program Files and seems to work. Would it be better to reinstall in location as you suggest? I notice if you do try to just reinstall it, it asks you if you want to remove the old one. SO I got nervous and said no way. Big Grin
