The invincible Maus....Rediculous???

Ok, I know its a heavy tank but come on.... It repels so many LARGE caliber bullets (40mm and above, AP and explosive) and takes DIRECT rocket hits and STILL keeps going.... Isn't this a little rediculous at the most? Is there any way to fix this? Or is there more to this that I do not know about?

The maus was about 180 tons and had armour between 60 and 240mm and was designed to stand up to the heaviest russian tanks so maybe not so far fetched.

You do realize I'm not just talking about guns, right? Even if I think over 10 shots of large caliber guns isn't enough... but now withstanding bombs and rockets too? Is that realistic? I mean... i somehow don't see that possible.

Hi!

I have put already years ago a few Maus'es among other practising targets to my home server.

I do not know about gun hits, but to my experience, Maus is destroyed with bombs quite like any T34 or Tiger and similar tanks. Like other well armored tanks of this sim, it of course requires the bomb practically hit a bullseye on it.

I have been practising tank bombing with 50 kg and 100 kg bombs and Maus is damaged just like any other tank of this sim, except that the larger Maus may be a little easier to hit with a bomb... So why not simply bomb it? Smile

The armor of the tank is modeled in the game for different strengths on different parts of the tank. Most tanks are week in the turret or from direct attack straight down on to the top of the tank. Try dive bombing and hitting the tank. Even the 40mm AP rounds from the Hurricane were said to be not enough for the late tanks.

Place a King Tiger and a IS3 close of each other frontal...u will see and endless (horrible aim!! Confusedhock: ) firing contest.

But u can take a Maus with 2 rockets from an IL-10 Big Grin.

The damage model of the ground objects is quite strange...

NEW DM for objects Big Grin ...

I've been using several heavy tanks in my campaign I'm building, and they do take quite a punishment.

However, they can be taken out with about 3 direct hits to the rear from a tempest's rockets

only gun I've ever seen capable of destroying one: 16inch 2 ton shell fired from the HMS King George

it took it out with one hit though =)

However, on a more realistic note: any near hit from a bomb would realistically destroy any thin membranes in the crew (for example, ears, eyes, etc) as well as de-naturize the protein in the brain.
Tank wouldn't be destroyed, true, but the crew would be more like goo.

Thank you for sharing this information. But I have one more question, would it really require 3 rocket hits just to kill one of these things in real life? I've tried rocket shots at them and I also noticed that 3 shots pretty much does it for one tank...

I've also heard somewhere that you can change the DM of static objects in Technics.ini or something similar? (I may need to be filled in here)

How does this work also? Because it doesnt seem real that a tank can withstand explosive warheads from rockets.

Well technically they made 5.
2 were assembeled (1 fully another with test turret) the other 3 with all lined up and ready to be assembeled.

And by the way, turret roof and hull roof not under the turret was 60mm thick armor.
Thats not the usual 10-20mm roofs of panthers and tiger's and etc...

There is one Maus on display at the Kubinka tank museum in Russia; years ago the German "Waffen Revue" published a pic or two of an incomplete Maus in Belarus. Not sure if this is a separate tank or whether the Belarus tank was later transported to Kubinka and restored there. In any case we can safely assume that the one in Kubinka is the only complete(?) one in the world. Almost be worth a trip there to take a look at it...........

altering the Panzer settings will affect the resistance to damage...

it looks to me as if the guy who created these went to some armour thickness tables for all the WW2 tanks and used their armour thicknesses to give the Panzer values...

looking at the data for other tanks it seems to me that there was no concern as to the quality of armour plate....nor whether it was sloped or not

Someone who is very interested in this aspect of the Tanks could do a job going through all the Panzer settings for the tanks and making a more realistic table/Technics.ini for them :wink:
