[WIP]Dewoitine D.520 (former complete noob effort)
#61

Here's the translation I promised.

Please use this only to help the development of the mod, as I don't have a permission from the author!!!

It includes only the memories directly related to the plane, though there are numerous more from memories about various engagements. Translation from “The D.520 Fighter - The Bulgarian Aerial Warrior - Vol.II In Combat over Sofia and the Balkans”, by Ivan Delchev, AeroSvyat magazine, “IKAR-PRES”, Sofia, 2001

Here's a short summary (plus what I remember from other volumes):
- far better turn radius and slightly better acceleration than the P-38
- turned better than the Bf 109G
- universal praise to the cannon by the Bulgarian pilots. Some actually believed they had 30mm Oerlikon cannons instead of the 20mm originals (see download)!
- tail wheel didn't lock properly, problematic landings
- unstable in hard and sharp manuevers
- Bulgarian machines were pretty worn out by 1943-44, frequent gun jams, broken prop pitch and radios, problems with the engines (which were weak), some planes became sluggish and unresponsive
- (as much as I love the D.520, but) completely outclassed by the P-51 and FW-190 (there was a short engament between Bulgarian 520's and German 190's).

I think its quite usefull for the a/c when compared to the late-war fighters. Big Grin

Thank you Messer for sharing theese wonderfull material, looks like the future Dewoitine pilots will have to do a lot of turning in order to win a dogfight. I didnt knew Bulgaria entered the war, brave souls thoose pilots.

By the way, 332Sqn_Per I would like to know how is the Dewoitines cockpit and its performance on Il-2 going to be like. Still its a long way to go and Im glad someone decided to make theese amazing french kite,

Kindest Regards!

Hi lads and thx for your interest and kind words!

Cockpit will be built. A squadmate is looking into that, but anyone having the urge is free to have a shot at it. Performancewise I have no idea Loht.

Apparently these problems always plagued the D-520. During Pierre Le Gloan's famous 5-kills mission against the Italians in June 1940, one of his wingmen had to turn back to base because of Prop Pitch problems, while the second suffered a gun jam and had to abort mission too ! Le Gloan himself wasn't flying his usual plane : it was grounded because of engine problems...
And the machines they flew were brand new at the time.
As for radios, well, I hope for the Bulgarians' sake they used there own radios as early WWII French radios were notorious for being plain awful.

Per : Amamzing ! From these few shots it looks like it's well under way, and in capable hands !
It finally looks like I'm going to see my favourite Italians-mauling machine implemented to the game Big Grin

Cheers
