WIP KI-44

Ki-44 climb > Corsair climb, AFAIK, so I'm guessing the Japanese pilot will have an advantage

... its Japanese, Japanese planes go up well, while American planes go down (as in dive) well... whilst bringing other planes down with it

Actually, in real life the F6F could outclimb the Zero and most other Japanese fighters. This was learned the hard way by some pilots who expected it to act like the F4F, and tried to climb away from it.
Don't let the performance of the Hellcat in Il2 fool you.
Also, Il2 does'nt (yet) have a late war version of the Corsair.

well done stefan, a really nice piece work. Big Grin

I look forward to spotting you way down below in this, turning my Corsair over and redefining screaming dead. The Corsair means death to ye!

keep up the magnificent work stefan Big Grin Big Grin

I shoot better than I dream.... Give me any situational advantage and I'll exploit it like a man who's willing to stuff the ballot box...
As is the same for any pilot that knows what he/she is doing. Smile

it is not the plane that makes the pilot , it is the pilot that makes the plane.... these are words well remembered. Just because a plane is better in area's does not mean that the pilot can't be out flown

and the sim is missing many japanese planes, thank god for the modelers that are working on these projects Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

There is a certain amount of truth in what you say, but all other things being equal I'd still rather have a plane with better performance.
Anyways I am glad we are getting this new Japanese plane.
Trying to keep things on-topic.

Great work, looking forward to flying against it! Big Grin

Bear in mind the Skoki was designed primarily as an intercepter-not an air superiority fighter like the Hayate. It was disliked by it's pilots because of it's poor maneuverability (by IJAAF standards) All else being equal, your chances against a well-flown F4U are probably fair at best, maybe equal vs a late model F6F. A good plane vs bombers, especially with the speacial weapons fits, but don't expect to sweep the skies of enemy fighters with it..
Of prime importance will be the flight model it gets.

AFAIK , the Ki-44 had a very poor performance at the extreme heights the B-29s operated and it could barely catch them. I think that with it high speed and climb rate it could be better vs fighters, rather than very high bomber interception. And it could take more damage and keep flying than most Japanese fighters. Smile
Will this use a new cockpit, too?

it was actually called the b29 killer because it COULD get to them and at the altitude they flew it was a very good A/C.
i have extensive information re this plane, compiled from many sites including certain Japanese sites dedicated ti the ki 44. all to hand when required for fm/wm/dm.

Well, the P-38 was also designed as interceptor and it was a deadly machine against fighters.....
The Shoki was a great plane at low and medium heights. Not so good at higher, but it was one of the better japanese planes nevertheless. Simply, the japanese have not anything better in climbing. At first, B-29s flew very high and Shokis had a very difficult time tryng to catch them. When B-29s changed to medium heights raids, the Shoki performed much better. Shokis and Toryus were the main B-29 killers.

b-29 service ceiling was 33,600 ft (10,200 m) cruise speed 220 mph ( 350 km/h)
Ki-44 service ceiling was 36,745 ft (11,200 m) cruise speed 249 mph ( 401 km/h)

"Tojo" was disliked by veteran pilots for its high landing speed and relatively poor maneuverability and It had a poor view on takeoff , so it killed a number of inexperienced pilots. However, it could climb and dive as well as most of its enemies

Most Ki-44 were IIb, armed with 4 x12,7mm machine-guns (1175 units) or IIc (2x 12,7 + 2x20, 40 or 37mm) (between 400 and 800 units). Only 3 operational units of III built.
They were fast, but at high, the air is more thin, and the Ki-44 had very small wings. It means it was fast, but hard to maneouver at high (more or less as an F-104 Starfighter)
At more low heights it was as nimble as any allied fighter, but not at the same league of Ki-43 and A6M, so "not maneuverable enough to Japanese standards"
It was a feared plane in CBI, far better than P-40s and Hurricanes and holding its own against P-38s, Spitfires, P-47s and Mustangs. I love it. It's the "poor man's Fw-190"

For japanese planes, "Famous Airplane of the world"series and "Mechanism of Military Aircraft" series are also good.
These books refer to original manuals, so you can see detailed Mechanism.
You can also read articles written by who participated in the project or pilot.

If you can read Japanese, search at Amazon.co.jp.

I for one am grateful for any Japanese plane added to the sim.
Now if we could only get our hands on a decent Ki-45 Nick....................................
