Hi all,

While not factory fitted, Mustang III's in RAF service saw widespread use of the MkII Gyro by 1945. I have several photos that show the MkII fitted, as well as combat reports (including S/L Peter Hearne of 19 Sqn) that mention the Gyro gunsight. I would be glad to put all the supporting evidence together if this mod is still a possibility.

Watch link's
Theres some photos of Mustang's MK III.
With MK II Gyrogunsight, and earlyer British gunsight ( not N3 or N9 ) it's look like Type 1 Mk 1

I'm guessing that the Mustang III was not fitted with a K-14 at the factory. North American did not make any non-bubbletop P-51s once they switched to production of the D models. The K-14 was not introduced (at the factory) until the D-10 production block. It is possible that the RAF production was fitted with a British gun sight, but I doubt that it would have been anything equivalent to the K-14 or any other gyro sight.

I've asked some other people with very detailed Mustang knowledge about this and will report back when I get an answer.

I got a repklly from Martin Kyburz, of the site Swiss Mustangs (http://www.swissmustangs.ch):

Quote:Mustangs were delivered to the RAF without gunsights - the RAF installed their own upon arrival - most common was the Mk. II Reflector Gunsight as seen above, but some also got the Mk. IIc and later Mk. IV Gyro Gunsight. The latter were also know as "Ace Maker" gunsights - variants were produced in the U.S. as USAAF K-14 and US Navy MK18

So, I suppose a Mustang III mod with a K-14 sight would in fact be historically correct!

Absolutely! Although, the Mk IIC Gyro would be more correct....

If Mr Jolly is up for a mod, I have ample evidence for the widespread use of the Mk II GGS in Fighter Command Mustang IIIs by early 1945.

Hi BomberBoy

IIRC, I don't believe that the K-14 was installed at the factory until the D-25. Every K-14 in use by 8th AAF Mustangs from July '44 til the last few weeks of the war were installed in-theater either at the unit, or at depot level.

It appears that Martin confirms that ADGB/Fighter Command Mustang III's were fitted with MK II GGSs in the same manner.

Just learned that factory installation of the K-14 sight was started during the D-20 block.

Hmmm. Provisions for zero-length rocket rails started with the -20 as well...
