Confused at controls
#1

Hi, im new here so i hope this forum is nice to noobs :3
i recently just stumbled upon IL2 and just recently bought the signiture pack on Steam (5 games in one) (of course i did my research first before buying). So I'm ready to play what looks to be a pretty awesome game, but the controls are acting incredibly wierd and difficult. Maybe its just a learning curve i have to go through but i truly seriously doubt the plane is supposed to just continuesly glide upward. and i seriously doubt that if i try to turn its supposed to spin spastically out of control and stall till i hit the ground. every time i turn my plane just jerks all over the place. help on why this is happening so i can enjoy this game would be greatly appreciated. cause really i havnt even gotten to actaully play a full quick mission yet without falling to the ground for no reason.

on a side note i wanted to try and use my Xbox 360 controller that goes to windows in this game. the game does read it but it is so loose and again i jerk all over the place. what the heck is up with the input menu?! its so confusing none of it makes sense. is there a guide or something on how to use it?
thank you for taking your time to read. i really hope i can be helped.
thanks.

well if your currently using your keyboard to fly thats probably whats causing you to stall all the time. Theres no sensitivity in the keyboard, so when you press the down arrow for example, you go from 0 deflection in your elevators to 100% deflection instantly. Aircraft cant handle such violent handling and spi n out of control

Spend some money on a Flight stick, spend more than 30-40 bucks on a decent one preferably a Throttle and Stick HOTAS type like the Saitek X-52 or better, believe me nothing makes a game harder to enjoy than crappy control input. Folks here and at other sim forums are more than happy to help you with set-ups and profiles. I would say that 90% of pilots having problems mastering this game are due to poor, cheap, worn-out controls. Through the years I've had 5 Logitech E3D sticks in varying model styles and the all wore out virtually the same way, are the bad? Not necessarily but I got big hands and cranking them around sometimes would cause the sounds of strain to emanate from within so I'm sure I was equally to blame for their demise. Come to think of it the controllers of my PS2 would do the same thing and they never would completely return to center. So if you seriously want to be amazed and addicted to this flight sim or become any good at it you need to make an investment and no matter how cool COD4 is this will become your favorite game and an X-box Controller just ain't gonna cut it anymore

I fly with an Saitek X-52 and Pro Series Rudder Pedals
a Cyborg Command Pad and Track-Ir 3

while i appreciate your input im sure you can understand that im not really into the idea to run out and buy an almost 100 dollar joystick after just buying the game, when im still not exactly sure if ill even enjoy it. i have a strong feeling i will because ive adored these games since i was a kid (Janes ATF Gold was the first combat sim i played). I really wish there was a way to get a feel for the game before buying this kinda expensive, yet very nice looking joystick. is there no way to get the 360 controller i have to work well enough so i can test "fly" (lol instead of drive...im sorry bad joke) this game before buying the stick?

I know a pilot that flies online with a 360 controller. He's pretty decent, but he's had a long time to learn.

The sim is very very realistic when it comes to flight behavior, Grunt. Things like not trimming your plane will make it rise up forever, and turning without stalling is something everyone must learn. And every plane is very different. Start off flying the Hurricane, or the La5, or the early Il2 attack planes. They're nice and stable and fun to fly.

You really do need a joystick. But you don't have to start with a 100 dollar one. I fly now with a Saitek throttle, Sidewinder joystick, and saitek rudder pedals. But for over a year I flew with only the Sidewinder and keyboard.

If you have thrift / used stores near you - look there for a Sidewinder. You can also check amazon or ebay. My favorite is the Precision Pro. I reccomend against force-feedback. It's unrealistic, and harder and more expensive to get.

I've bought 4 sidewinders now at about $10 a peice at goodwill.

I've heard the Saitek Av8r is a good starter stick too, check that out if you can't find a sidewinder. One thing you really need is a twist-stick for the rudder, which the sidewinder and many others have. If you stick with it you'll want pedals eventually, but they're another $120 or so, so for now look for a twisty stick.

Don't worry about getting an expensive stick if you're unsure about the game.

Get a cheap one first, and try it out. A 360 controller will hardly benefit you in any way, as they're designed for a different purpose...

Go out and have a look, I'm sure you'll find some joystick that is cheap and will help you deceide wether you want to upgrade the joystick or not play the game alltogether... I had the same questions when I started playing, and I now have all the accessories supported by IL-2 apart from rudder pedals, but they're my next buy

Good luck, and happy flyin'!
