I've had the 8800 GTS 320mb for over a year now with no problems..
I've never bothered going looking for the latest and greatest drivers either

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this sounds a lot like Operator Headspace and Timing error.
Any tech worth a darn would have told you to completely delete the old drivers first (ie. use Driver Cleaner Pro). That will remove ALL instances of the old drivers.
Then you install the old drivers. Plus, it's not the card. By your own post, you said that the problems started after the last update you made. That means it's drivers, not hardware.
Drivers = Software
Card = Hardware
Though I fly through the valley of death, I will fear no evil.....
For I am the meanest SOB in the valley!
I have 512 GTS, love it!
i havent messed with drivers since october edition
you must have a bad card, or you have set it up wrong i have the older version of that card.. havent had any problems.
Intel6600 3.2ghz,Nvidia 8800GTS 640mb flashed with my customfirmware, evga 780i, 4gb @ 1066mhz, and a 1000 Corsair PSU, windows xp SP3 with newest drivers.
I had that v/card from more than a year and I had no problems till now and I have the latest drivers installed, so I think that or You have a faulty card or You mada something wrong with the drivers install (more probable)
I have the 8800 GTS OC 512mb version and it is excellent, it is the latest drivers that has messed you up, i had similar problems with the latest drivers which caused GPU crashes, i contacted Nvidia support ad they told me that many users are having problems with this latest update and advised me to get the second latest one, the one just before and it works better than ever.
