[MOD] SBD3 Dauntless reworked Gunsight/Bombsight v1.2 (3-27)
#1

Version 1.2 (3-27-09)

Some of the lighting effects that I wanted were not showing up in perfect mode, this update should correct that defect.

Within the mod you have the option of either brightened or normal lighting through the scope, just follow the instructions.

Normal lighting thru scope:

Brighter lighting thru scope:

In this mod I reworked the gunsight/bombsight for the SBD3 Dauntless dive bomber.

-There are some new textures.

-The gunsight view is reworked so that you do not entirely lose sight of the cockpit while diving on your target.

-Also with this mod you now have the option of changing FOV (field of view) while in gunsight view.

-You may have noticed with the stock SBD3 that the iron sight and the telescopic sight do not give the same targeting solution (the iron sight tracks further left than the telescopic). I tried to bring the iron sight into closer agreement with the telescopic sight.

-Slip Indicator added

Below are some screens to contrast stock views with views with this mod at 1000M which is about where you want to drop your ordinate.

Installation:
delete SBD3_sights_v1.0 and/or SBD3_sights_v1.1 folder from MODS

copy SBD3_sights_v1.2 folder into your MODS folder.

Deactivate: prefix the SBD3_sights_v1.2 folder with a "-"

or if you don't like it- just delete SBD3_sights_v1.2

Not that your work isn't great, which it is, but I recall seeing a yaw indicator in the bombsight of a SBD.

I beleive this is what the device in the lower portion of the default gunsight represensts, although it doesn't much look like the one I remember.

Thanks, This is a great mod. Are there plans to do the SBD5?

SBD-5 has the standard Mk.VIII sight.

This would be useful- in my experience the bomb will sail on you if your yaw is not zeroed out. I can do this, but would the gauge be seen thru the eyepiece or outside? If my dad was still alive, I could ask him, he flew SBD's for the Marines. As sim pilots we sometimes neglect the importance of trimming the aircraft, My Dad told me that during flight training this was a major topic.

I've installed this, and i'm pretty happy with it, EXCEPT that I do not get an option to toggle FOV..???, as stated above. :?:
Not being able to do so kinda renders this mod useless to me, so if anyone knows what the deal is with that, I'd be happy to hear it...

Ok, never mind, another case of 'TEST BEFORE YOU TYPE'....
Conflicting with the Clickable SBD Pit mod, removed - this works like a charm!!
Many thanks, gents! Big Grin

This Rocks IMO !

Really like the zoomable telescopic view feature

(although I kept forgetting about it and wondering why TIR isn't working...I guess I need to go back to flight school !)

This is really proof that great things come in small packages! Extremely well done ( even if I did still miss the Japanese Carrier on fist use.)With 6DOF I can see around it too -to make carrier landings a bit more doable! This was pretty tough before trying to see thru the big sight that was in the way!

it is inside the telescope, so that you can look at your target and slip without moving your head.

the slip was expecially important because in dives your tourque really runs away, in fact, in a near vertical dive, your slip indicator will often be thrown all the way to the left or right.

this is how I remember the telescope I saw.

unlike yours, it also had the cross-hairs at the end away from the eye, so that if your eye wasn't dead center, it wouldn't move in your perspective very much.

lastly, as you said "As sim pilots we sometimes neglect the importance of trimming the aircraft, My Dad told me that during flight training this was a major topic."

this is very true. in fact, most people almost never trim their planes in combat. If anywhere, it is here that the trim is most important. In a F4U, properly trimmed I can out run untrimmed planes that are generally considered faster. In fact, you also can get rid of the supposed AI advantage in speed. they arn't faster, just trimmed!

this also stops the supposed p47 lack of dive ability. It, like the corsair, just has a lot of tourque in a dive, that causes it to yaw a lot at high speed. if trimmed, you will often find that you have to sometimes worry about going right past that Bf109 you were previously behind.

Thanks F4U,

Thats what I was looking for.

I know how this can be done, I just need to experiment a bit. Being able to monitor slip while in bombsight view would greatly increase accuracy. I know in HUD view my accuracy is about 2x better because of the slip/skid indicator. Smile

Slip/skid indicator added for V1.1, it helps with getting your bombs on target, but it is still hard to zero out the yaw in a dive.

Im not kidding when i say i Love you. The SBD is my favorite pacific plane. I always thought the pilot's and gunner;s of the plane must have been brave men considering the fact that they knew there plane was ti inferior to the enemies planes. i always thought the plane should have been given more work to.

*EDIT* Found this online found it hilarious
