More Precise Level Bombing than that with Bombsight Table

Hi,

I've been using bombsight table 2 for most of my level bombing requirements. However, I have noticed that my bombs sometimes drop an unacceptably short distance from the intended target and thusly I'm not doing as well as I could be.

Bombsight Table, good though it is, is not accurate enough to get great results. Altitude goes up in blocks of 50Meters (164Feet), and while the speed is a little better, everything goes inline with the metric measurements making it tough to bomb to decent round imperial numbers.

I have tried to compile an excel spreadsheet with all the missing values filled in and with clever formulae to do the witchcraft, but this is waaaaay beyond me and nothing is tallying up.

Has anyone here got, and if you have, are you willing to share, the matrix or the knowledge to help me build my own matrix to get really good precise bomb-runs.

Any help is massively appreciated.

That YT video is good and I will try some practise over the coming days. I think though, it would be nice if I could hit the target without the need for locating dummy targets... Especially when in some cases, there are none or insufficient time to do the dummy target thing,

I scan-read the chapters that directly referred to bombing with BST2 in that super-duper document and it is referring to offset values.

?!

Offset values? Yikes.

How on earth is one supposed to find out the correct off-set value and why do they even exist in the first place. Would a speed and an altitude not be the defining factors? How does the type of aircraft make a difference.

Maths was never my strong point. I'm sure you can probably imagine the massive bank of questions currently running through my mind.

Any simple explanations/solutions. What would "Level-Bombing in you four-engined B-Something plane: For Dummies" say?

This is getting far more complicated than I thought I ever would.

Bombs still fall a bit short because your TRUE airspeed is slightly different from your INDICATED. Therefore you must use the workaround in that tutorial to be more accurate. Its historically correct as well.

About those offset values. Yes, BT2 won't give you the exact angle when you enter the correct data in it. Usually its offset by 1.5 or 2.5 degress (less than BT2 angle). Thats your true angle.

Offsets also depends on the altitude and the bombsight itself.

All 4 engined bombers (USAAF) that have been made flyable by mods use B-25's NORDEN BS - so thats what you should be looking at in the manual.

In the manual there is a QRBC, or Quick Reference Bombing Chart - which holds all offsets for all bombsights in game and also has some pre-calculated angles on which you can drop without using BT2 and calculating at all.



Manual release method is much more easy to set up and execute than automated release. I'd recomend that you stay away from bombsight automation and its lvl bombing method.

Mr Thor... Great job on that document. I can imagine writing all of that kept you busy for a fair while.

I'll go for a few runs and decrease the angle as you've suggested and hopefully I'll start hitting the targets. I'm ashamed to admit though, that I reading the manual reminds me a little bit of cramming fro my exams. I get a head full of clay and that horrible head-achy feeling and I think to myself, "I'm never going to learn any of this".

Not because the document is bad, but I learn best from actually trying to do it and I get frustrated when things don't match up the way I expect. Sucks to be me sometimes.

Wow!

Thats an interesting development. I went for a deduction of 2degrees from the BST2 value and with the B's 17, 24 and the 29 got near-as-dammit-perfect results each time.

For an acurate deduction just look at the QRBC. It guarantees a perfect hit up to 8 KM.

And to answer your earlier question, it took 5 months to do the manual. I'm glad people are making a good use of it.

I have discovered that Bomb Sight Table 2 is accurate for the HC4000 cookie that can be dropped from the Mossie XVI WITHOUT subtracting 2 degrees.

I was initially having trouble with hitting the target as I was doing the usual thing of subtracting 2 from the BST2 result but the bombs dropped long. Experimenting I found that the BST2 bomb angle is accurate from 27000 ft

Of course the huge blast helps!
